Maggitt-Williams looking to aid in the trenches

"Last year towards the end of the season I started playing just a little bit inside, and I think I was able to show some of the qualities they wanted to see. I feel like this year we're going to move around a lot and get some more speed on the inside," said the senior Williams, a Gainesville, Fla., native. "I feel like I can definitely help with that.

"Oh yeah, I feel like we can definitely be dangerous. I see some bright futures." Added the versatile Maggitt, who sat out all of the 2013 season after suffering a torn ACL in November 2012 in a loss against Missouri, "We have so many packages. I can have my hand on the ground. I can be standing up. I can be in the box in a linebacker's stance. I will be moving around a lot. But majority of the time, I will have my hand down."

There's an optimism the Vols can have their best pass-rushing tandem off the edge with the redshirt junior Maggitt, now 247 pounds, and sophomore Corey Vereen opposite bookends; Williams has largely played the edge in his 31 career games.

Williams talked with coaches in the offseason, made a conscious effort to get bigger before spring camp and is enthused about the potential of the Vols' rush packages. "When I got back in January, I think I was gaining a pound a week. Just putting it on a little bit slower, but I got up to 275," Williams said. "It's the heaviest I've ever been, but I feel all right. "A big thing is just getting better, using my hands better and getting better every day."

So, J. Williams moving to DT, Maggitt and Vereen at DE most of the time. Boom.

I know that we are replacing all the starters but I definately see this years DL having a lot more attitude and swagger than last years. They have the potential to be nasty!

This. 11 men on the field, in our normal 4-3 we have 4 guys definitely coming (most plays), that leaves 7 to cover the 5 eligible receivers (assuming a pass). The next most common person to blitz is the SOLB in most schemes (where Curt will play). Then obviously in our nickel we will go to a 4-2-5 rather than a 3-3-5 so instead of taking one if our best players and leaders off we are cross training him at DE. Then that leaves us options at DT, of whether to slide J-Will inside or to throw say a Carr out there, also O-Will, Sauls , and Danny O. Versatility seems to be a focusing point of our staff not only on defense but with the WRs/RBs too

Mine will all be in TN for Spring Break and I won't be heading down there until Saturday. I refuse to pass up the opportunity to watch dem Vols in the Sweet 16. I'll be solo as well but it's all good in the hood brother. :clapping:

It would really be nice to see some of these recruits (Bryant, Bates, Weatherd, Johnson, Creamer?) able to step up and give AJ, Maggitt and JRM some rest. Depth at LB should be much better this year than that past few years. Hate not being able to RS some of these guys, but it seems necessary that some or all of them will get some playing time this year.

I'm hoping Weatherd can take Maggitts place at OLB and Maggitt can slide down to DE. Pipe dream I know

are you sure about that?

i was under the impression that in most 4-3 schemes your Will is the one that would typically be blitzing more - the Sam or SOLB would be covering the TE and so that would leave the WOLB with more freedom to blitz

Weatherd won't be asked to play coverage, it's not his strength. He's going to rush the passer. Both he and VQ have said as much recently.
