Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XI

By all measurable parameters, viewership is at an all time high for the NFL. The TV product has improved so dramatically with HD tv, the illustrations, commentary, instant replay from multiple angles, the yellow first down line, updates and replays of other games being played at the same time, that it is eclipsing the in game experience. Especially considering the price of a game ticket, concessions, parking, etc. Their biggest challenge is getting people to come to the games at the stadiums as opposed to watching it on their 60 inch HD tv for free.

Along with the decreasing quality of talent, all hype- no substance mentality, penalties, and the quality of the game decreasing. How doesn't it plunge? I'm sick of the PT Barnum show product.

Pigs are greedy, and hogs get slaughtered!

My version is probably hot true authentic. It is basically a really simplified chili served over pasta with tons of cheddar and sour cream

1 pound beef
1 chopped onion
1 TBS chili powder
2 cans kidney beans, drained
2 cans diced tomatoes
1 tsp salt, or to taste

Simple, but good. A nice taste of home, just had it last week

Only one tablespoon of chili powder? Wur da spice at? :search:

Aren't you in Thailand right now? :)

And I'll say this. Tournament play above all else is about matchups and solid D. We've had both fall our way and Michigan is no different. I've always believed Pearl's coaching style wasn't suited for long tourney runs, but Cuonzo's style is perfect for it. Problem has been getting to a tournament that meant anything...

Rebounding and free throws IMO. Crazy how many games are decided by who shoots better at the line.

Basketball = chimps on rims.
Football = pigs at a circus.

I guess you're a baseball guy?

i think you are mistaking your dislike of the NFL for a trend

it is not a trend - there is no stat on earth that would show a trend for the NFL decreasing in popularity - in fact, every stat would show just the opposite - over the last 20-30 years it has grown leaps and bounds and is the #1 sport in a not even close race - Monday night football will beat the world series - its just not close and is trending up not down

stadium seats mean nothing for popularity or for money in the NFL - TV ratings are what drives everything

EDIT....and on your point about expressing real viewership - it actually understates it with sporting events b/c people go to sports bars and watch the games - unlike what you might do with a normal TV show - so if anything those numbers on the NFL are understated, not overstated - yet it still had 34 of the 35 most watched shows of the year last year

yep, heading for the tubes - sell, sell, sell

The smart owners will keep Cuban in mind over the next while to judge. Dan Snyder and guys like him will be slaughtered. I wish the feds would make them pay taxes.
I personally lost interest in the NFL due to the flags, canned atmosphere, over advertising, and over saturation.
Makes me think of Baseketball.

Almost certain that owners have to pay taxes. NFL league office doesn't, but that's only about 5% of league revenue. Heard someone explain the nonprofit misconception of the NFL on the radio the other day. He could be wrong, but he said teams pay taxes, NFL office does not.

I'm not alone on my opinion at all. This how hardcore football fans feel. The NFL 10 years ago was amazing. It's basically pigs squealing.
The only reason viewership is going up is because of the catering to women. Less and less men are watching, and the youth are leaving as quick as the nfl is growing. There are stats for that.

Wait until people refuse to pay 300 bucks a month for cable. Tell me how seats matter then. I watch college football because its not gimmicky diluted crapball and soap opreas. The NFL has turned into a big soap!

I'd love to see these stats. Regardless, it's a business, and for every one of you that loses interest there are 10 others who watch more of it. They're smart to do whatever boosts ratings, and it seems to be doing just that, whatever it is they're doing. Ratings don't lie.

Ratings lie all the time. Fiat had a five star crash test rating, and the feds retested and said they failed. Same as the car companies in general. You think all college polls and recruiting ratings are accurate to. Ratings are just somebody's opinion.
The NFL is going for a money grab like pigs. It will get them slaughtered when their rabid fans walk out on them because of the reasons I listed.

Nobody notices the sudden boost of soccer fans over the last 10 years? If you don't, you're in denial.

70,000 seats x $100 avg tckt price is 7M per game plus concessions and parking, another 1-2 M per game. Say 8M per game to be conservative. times 8 reg season plus 2 preseason = 80 million a year. plus playoff game(s) if good. I guarantee you they care about it--a lot.

Haha, apparently I needed to be more specific.

TV ratings don't lie. Companies put their faith 100% in Neilson, and their advertising dollars drive decisions. Whatever the NFL is doing raises TV ratings, and as a business, that's the smart thing to do.

Why does the increase in soccer fandom have to coincide with a decrease in nfl fandom? I consider myself a hardcore Vols, Bears, Chelsea, Stl Cardinals, Stl Blues, Chicago Bulls, and MLS fan.

Compare that to the multiple billions in non stadium revenue, and it becomes a lot less important. Even if they lost half of that 80 million due to a decline in attendance, that's about 2%

I would have been nauseated at a Reds game as well

That's OK - many of us Reds fans are right there with you. Half the pitching staff is on the DL to start the season.

That being said, Dat Dude and Johnny said to pass along a "hey" to VolsnCards. :)

Speaking of home, I know you may have explained before, but what in tarnations took you out to Thailand?

I understand it's not the bulk of a team's revenue but nobody is going to ignore that kind of money walking out the door. Every revenue stream counts. And after the shared TV money, that is the next biggest stream, followed by merchandise sales.

LOL at only going up because of catering to women.

Do a little research on fantasy football. The NFL spent tons of money to push fantasy football because it creates interest for the casual fan in numerous games per week. Vested interest in more teams than just your local = higher viewership. Which = bigger tv deals.

As for the sudden boost in soccer, that can be directly correlated to an increase in money spent on marketing, as well as the building of soccer specific stadiums which enhances the fan experience, also they are now willing to spend the money to bring in and keep talent in MLS.

Also, new cable packages make it much easier to view games from leagues around the world.

The major sport (and some people will say it's not a sport) that has seen a large decrease in attendance is auto racing (NASCAR) and it is mainly because of the changes in car setup. The loss of Earnhart, Sr. had an effect at the start but rule changes and car setup changes played a big part in losing fans. Pro football might suffer declines if a lot of stupid rule changes occur.

This is true... But TV is the future, besides Jerryworld, look for future stadiums to be smaller in capacity with more luxury areas. They will try to create a more intimate experience for the fans to attract people to come to the games.
