Mack CrowderAt 6-foot-4, 270 pounds, Mack Crowder of Tennessee High School in Bristol, Tennessee is an imposing figure. And with his 3.9 GPA, the talented center has the brains and the brawn to play at the next level.

At least Vanderbilt Coach Bobby Johnson thinks so.

After sending an email to the Vanderbilt staff earlier this week, Crowder received some big news on Wednesday.

“Coach Kitchings was responding to an email I sent him,” said Crowder. “He said Mack, just call me when you have a chance, I’ve got some great news for you. I called him yesterday after school and he said I had an offer from Vandy. He put the coaches on the phone and they all congratulated me and everything.”

In addition to Vanderbilt, Crowder has also been hearing from Coach Cutcliff and Coach Luke at Duke. The Blue Devils asked him to make the trip to Durham on Friday, when they intend to present a scholarship offer.

“We’re actually heading up there right now,” Crowder told VolNation.com on Thursday evening. “We just stopped by Wake Forest and talked to the head coach and sat down with him for a minute. Then we are on our way up to Duke right now.”

It takes a unique talent to play the center position and Crowder says coaches really like his combination of size, strength, and intelligence.

“They need a smart player to be a center on the offensive line since that’s where all the calls are coming from and everything, on the offensive line,” Crowder said. “They like my build. They really think they can work on my strength and my size.”

But to be successful on the line, sometimes it takes more than intelligence and physical attributes. To play in the trenches, it also helps to have a nasty side and Crowder has it. One recruiting service dubbed the talented prospect as having a “mean streak” on the football field.

“Me and my two brothers, we are the nicest people you could meet off the field, but it’s a whole different story whenever we get on the field,” Crowder said.”It’s just something we grew up with, something my dad taught us.”

With schools such as Vanderbilt, Duke, and Georgia Tech showing interest, it’s safe to assume that academics will be a huge factor in Crowder’s college choice.

“With my two brothers being in the Ivy League it’s obviously something we look at pretty heavily,” Crowder said. “We want to look at the options we have coming out of college as well as being in college. We are looking beyond college really whenever we’re going to these schools. “

In addition to those named above, Crowder is hearing from several other schools including Virginia Tech, Boston College, Virgina, Mississippi State, Miami, Syracuse, and Auburn.
