Which will be made back up in state income and sales taxes and possibly higher property taxes because now you have more people working at a higher wage.

I know.

People said the same thing when Mercedes was lured to Alabama - frankly it's the best thing that happened to the Alabama economy since they started making iron and steel here or at least since the military/space program invested here.

These tax breaks are revenue that the state wouldn't have gotten if the company didn't come here so it's not as if taxes are taken away from the state.

As you point out however because of the economic impact of the new company tax revenues actually do increase from both better jobs (individual taxes) and attracted businesses (eg. the supply network due to Mercedes, then Toyota (engine), Honda and Hyundai).

It is how a state can invest in it's economy without laying out cash (although there are frequently infrastructure investments made).

It may not always work out but for projects of this size it typically does.

Alabama will now have Mercedes, Hyundai, Toyota, Honda and Mazda building cars in the state.

Hard to see how anyone could spin this a bad news or problematic.

Might be the one problem with some of these schemes that seems to be the most complicated to fix (in terms of funding these infrastructure improvements). If the company pulls up stakes or folds soon after all of this work is done (Hemlock in Clarksville, TN , for example), the locals are left holding the bag.
