• HEAD COACHING DEBUT: Saturday’s matchup with West Virginia will mark Tennessee head coach Jeremy Pruitt’s first game as a head coach.


• ELITE RESUME: Prior to being named the 26th head coach in Tennessee football history on Dec. 7, 2017, Pruitt established himself as one of the top defensive coordinators in the country during stops at Alabama (2016-17), Georgia (2014-15) and Florida State (2013).


• LEADER OF HISTORIC DEFENSES: In five seasons as a defensive coordinator, Pruitt’s defenses have finished No. 1 in the nation in scoring defense three times (2013, 2016, 2017), ranked No. 1 in total defense twice (2016, 2017) and led the nation in rush defense (2016, 2017) and pass defense (2013, 2015) twice each.


• RELEVANT RECORDS: Since becoming a coordinator in 2013, Pruitt’s defenses have been stifling. His teams went 23-6 against ranked opponents with three shutouts, 5-0 in season-openers and 2-0 at Bank of America Stadium.

• RARE BIG 12 MATCHUP: The Belk Kickoff Classic against West Virginia will mark the second time that the Vols have faced a Big 12 opponent in a season-opening neutral site game. Tennessee faced off against eventual national champion Colorado (now a member of the Pac-12) to open the 1990 season in Anaheim, Calif.
