Making room for Rhett

That's exactly what I thought. Could be one more leave if the right JC player or another 5th year player became available although they've not had a lot of luck with JC players. I believe Zo will do whatever he can to have another tourney team next season. Another Sweet 16 or an Elite Eight would really help his future recruiting.

Bleacher Report: The biggest storyline from the outside this spring is your quarterback battle between Justin Worley, Joshua Dobbs, Nathan Peterman and Riley Ferguson. Where does that stand right now?

Butch Jones: I've been very, very encouraged from that position from what I've seen this spring. Justin Worley has really improved greatly, from leadership to his ability to make all of the throws, particularly the deep balls. Dobbs continues to develop, as well as Peterman, and it's been great to get Riley Ferguson getting a volume of repetition. You know, Riley has an innate ability to create plays. I've been very encouraged. We've tried to simulate as many game-speed repetitions as possible.

Their play as a unit has been elevated because of the players around them. Adding Von Pearson and Josh Malone to the receiving corps, Daniel Helm and Ethan Wolf to the tight end crew and then Jalen Hurd in the backfield has really changed the speed of our offense. Even though they're young, that's why we're getting more consistent quarterback play.

We're going to be extremely patient, take our time and do our due diligence. We'll probably name a starter in [fall] training camp. All of the individuals have progressed, and monumental strides can be taken during the summer months. We're going to be patient, coach, teach and critique, but I've been encouraged.

Bleacher Report: Last year, the four-man competition went down to game week, even though Worley was getting a heavier load of first-team reps. Do you want to narrow it down to two a little sooner?

Butch Jones: We do. We'll start to narrow it down. It's extremely challenging with four quarterbacks. We will start to narrow it down probably at the end of this week or so.

Worley's efficiency stood out big time today. Croom still continues to be one most improved offensive players.

On the heels of "Fundamental Tuesday," Tennessee returned to Haslam Field for "Tough Thursday" as the Vols logged their 10th practice of spring camp with hundreds of high school coaches on hand for Butch Jones' annual coaching clinic, which runs through Saturday.

With far more spectators than the previous nine practices, Jones ushered his Vols into intense early battles. Dimarya Mixon tangled with Ray Raulerson in an early circle-of-life showdown in which Mixon gained leverage and drove Raulerson back. Called on for the second of three-straight times, Mixon battled Kyler Kerbyson with the Vols' junior offensive lineman getting the better of the freshman Mixon. The final battle featuring Mixon saw him again initially meet the challenge from Marcus Jackson before Jackson, a redshirt junior, gained the final edge.

Jordan Williams and Dylan Wiesman battled to a virtual standoff.

In one-on-one battles, Jason Croom had the offensive highlight on a catch from Justin Worley while rookie Emmanuel Moseley made a fine defensive play to break up a Josh Dobbs-to-Marquez North fade into the end zone. Von Pearson elicited a pass interference penalty on Malik Foreman when Pearson beat Foreman on in inside slant at the goal line.

Jones then went directly into a modified offense versus defense scenario from the 8-yard line. It was three offensive players trying to score on the same number of defenders, with the offense scoring on three of its four possessions. Only once, however, did the offense score on its first snap --- Alden Hill bulling into the end zone from 8 yards away.

Following the unit's second consecutive TD, Jones implored "another soft group" of defenders take the field. That's when the unit got its lone stop in the drill.

There were a pair of Corey Vereen-versus-Dontavius Blair battles, with Vereen easily besting Blair around left end on the first one before moments later Blair protected his quarterback and shoved Vereen well behind the play. Coleman Thomas also had a nice win in thwarting an attempted pass rush in the same drill.

The Vols continued to work a bevy of players on kickoff return, with Pearson, North, Foreman, Josh Malone, Devrin Young and a couple of others getting reps.

Zach Azzanni then appeared to introduce yet another new drill to the wide receivers, with the receivers coach making his charges work essentially on jump-ball drills designed to make a receiver high-point the football. Azzanni lobbed footballs to a receiver who was surrounded by multiple other wideouts charged with playing the role of defensive back attempting to break up the pass. Pearson, Croom, North and Malone all had some nice catches, but no wideout was perfect in the drill.

Jakob Johnson, the freshman midtermer who's been working at second-team linebacker, also got some situational looks at defensive end.

• Running back Marlin Lane and tackle Marques Pair were both absent during the open portion of practice. Coach Butch Jones will provide any update on their status after practice.
• Left tackle Dontavius Blair and defensive linemen Dimarya Mixon were among the players Jones wanted to see in drills early in practice. Jones gave Blair two shots in a pass-blocking drill against defensive end Corey Vereen, with each winning one. Mixon got three cracks at different offensive linemen in one-on-one blocking drills. He stalemated with Ray Raulerson, but was knocked back by Kyler Kerbyson and Marcus Jackson.
• Emmanuel Moseley had one of the best plays of the day in a one-on-one drill against Marquez North. Moseley got beaten off the line, but made a nice recovery and got just enough of the ball to deflect it away from a leaping North. In the same drill, Jason Croom easily got past safety LaDarrell McNeil and made a leaping grab in the corner of the end zone for a touchdown. Cameron Sutton also had good coverage on Josh Malone and forced Riley Ferguson to throw it out of the end zone during another rep in the same drill.

Jones said they've been considering moving Carr to offensive tackle for awhile. They will decide after a few more practices.
