Post-NSD 2016 Depth Chart Projections

I thought it was discussed in the football concepts article that we may not use Nickel nearly as much in Shoop's defensive schemes as we saw under Jancek. Shoop prefers the Star position in passing situations, which means one of the OLBs will slide out from the base 4-3 to cover the slot receive in passing situations as a hybrid OLB/SS hybrid. This would likely mean McDowell or A. Smith I would think.

Sounds perfect for JRM, McDowell, Austin Smith, Elliot Berry, and Sapp.

Vols 2016 Football Depth Chart

Offense:
QB: J. Dobbs / Q. Dormandy / S. Jones
RB: J. Hurd / A. Kamara / J. Kelly
WR 1: P. Williams / J. George / B. Johnson
WR 2: J. Malone / J. Jennings / L. Williams
Slot: J. Smith / M. Callaway / V. Perry
TE: E. Wolf / J. Croom / A. Pope
LT: D. Richmond / B. Kendrick / D. Blair
LG: J. Robertson / V. Boulware / A. Sanders
C: C. Thomas / J. Jones / R. Raulerson
RG: D. Wiseman / V. Boulware / C. Mosely
RT: C. Hall / B. Kendrick / R. Johnson

Defense:
DE 1: D. Barnett / K. Phillips / L. Lewis
DT 1: K. McKenzie / A. Johnson / D. O'Brien
DT 2: S. Tuttle / K. Vickers / D. Mixon
DE 2 : C. Vereen / J. Kongbo / A. Butcher
SLB: D. Bates / A. Smith / El. Berry
MLB: D. Kirkland Jr / K. Bynum / G. Bryant
WLB: J. Reeves-Maybin / C. McDowell / Q. Sapp
CB 1: C. Sutton / M. Osborne / D. Henderson
CB 2: J. Martin / E. Mosely / T. Byrd
NB: R. Gaulden / M. Foreman / M. Abernathy
S 1: T. Kelly Jr / S. Griffin
S 2: Ev. Berry / N. Warrior

Specialists:
K: A. Medley / G. Bullock
P: T. Daniel / T. Townsend
LS: R. Lovingood
KR: Ev. Berry / A. Kamara
PR: C. Sutton / A. Kamara

*I think that Gaulden will actually start at S opposite Kelly Jr but slide to NB when we do use one. Also I think that Kongbo will eventually overtake Vereen for the other starting DE spot. Jennings long term position eventually decided after he works both WR and S during spring and coaches then make a decision. Chances of Sapp working both LB and S and A. Smith getting some looks at DE.

Sapp at safety would be a desperation move...and it's not needed.

I think he did actually play some safety at practice. For that reason, I could see him in the STAR position.

Last year...after it was thought that McNeil was done for the season...and even after we lost Randolph for targeting, wasn't used in that capacity. Wasn't arguing against using him at STAR...just at the split time at safety part.
