It's a real breed of wolf (canis rufus), that once roamed our area of Arkansas.
They are endangered with around 300 in existence. About 200 are in captivity (breeding programs)....with a large number in North Carolina.
Several years ago, I saw a pair at Land Between the Lakes.
Also, they released a dozen or so at the Smokies 10-15 yrs ago....but they started breeding with coyotes, and in general, weren't doing well as their numbers dropped.
