So same age range. Do you have any intel on the "dope" for soda thing? Like I said I just assumed it was a connect the dots thing to the early version of Coca Cola having cocaine. Any ideas?

I believe that's it. All the older folk called it dope, sometimes a sodie dope. I sorta view that as the transition point to folks calling it soda.

From the word dictionary...

“Also in the 1800s, the meaning of dope was extended to include various medicinal mixtures or syrups, including the syrups from which soda-fountain drinks like Coca-Cola were prepared. A continuation of this usage survives in the South, particularly in South Carolina, where dope refers to the carbonated soft drink that elsewhere in the United States is called cola.”
