It is hard to believe--astounding--that we lost three players to season-ending surgery before the season was 25 minutes old. Our best scorer, our best midfielder and one of our top recruits. I thought maybe M. Christy might be back but saw where she just had surgery too! Good grief.

Vols Storm Past Navy, 3-0 Cali Hutson, Amy Neal and Anna McClung score as Julie Eckel & UT D posts 4th shutout

Cali Hutson scored in the 19th minute and Amy Neal and Anna McClung added second-half goals to give Tennessee a 3-0 victory over Navy on Friday at Regal Soccer Stadium.

Tennessee (2-0-3) outshot Navy (2-3-0) 24-9 with 10 shots on goal. Reigning SEC Defensive Player of the Week Julie Eckel (2-0-3) was masterful in goal once again, posting three saves to lead the UT defense to its fourth shutout of the season.

The Vols' three goals on Friday matched their season total entering the contest.

McClung's strike in the 67th minute soared in from the front left corner of the box over Navy goalkeeper Dayton Wetherby (1-3-0). The goal was her second on the year and the Gate City, Va., native has been involved on four (two goals, two assists) of UT's six goals this year. Meghan Flynn stole the ball 35 yards out and made a move into the left side of the box before dishing it out to McClung for the shot from distance.

UT's defense was more organized coming out of halftime and the team's energy early on paid off when Neal scored in the 49th minute off of passes from Anna Bialczak and Emily Morrow. Morrow sent the ball in from the left side and Neal punched it in near the right post for her second goal on the season.

Tennessee enjoyed a 1-0 lead at the break thanks to Hutson's 19th-minute score. Hutson gathered a ball off a deflection from Bialczak in the middle of the box and fired from the left side to the right post for her first goal on the year.

Carlyn Baldwin scored in the 13th minute and Anna Bialczak and Anna McClung added second-half scores to lead Tennessee to a 3-0 win over Murray State on Sunday at Regal Soccer Stadium.

The win on Sunday night completed an impressive weekend for Tennessee (3-0-3) as the Vols outscored Navy and Murray State by a combined score of 6-0 while playing 180 minutes of scoreless defense.

On the season, the Vols have posted five shutouts in six matches and have outscored opponents 9-1. UT has yet to allow a home goal this year.

Tennessee enjoyed a 15-11 shot advantage over Murray State (2-2-0) and used a second-half surge to put away the Racers after a competitive first half.

In the 71st minute, McClung took a pass from Nicole Seaman at midfield and broke loose down the center of the Murray State third for a rocket shot in the middle of the box. The goal was McClung's third on the year (team high) and the eighth of her career.

Bialczak found the back of the net for the first time in her career in the 56th minute. Amy Neal sent a deep cross into the box from the right side and Bialczak connected from six yards out to put the ball in the center of the goal.

The Vols and Murray State each had six shots in the first half.

In the 13th minute, Cali Hutson sent a corner kick in to the middle of the box and Susan Ferguson sent a ball forward to Baldwin inside the six-yard box. Baldwin put it away to the middle of the net for her first goal of the season and the second of her career.

Tennessee opens its SEC schedule on Sept. 11 when it takes on Arkansas in Fayetteville for a SEC Network + broadcast. UT returns to Regal Soccer Stadium on Sept. 13 for its final non-conference regular-season match against Belmont.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- After helping Tennessee to a pair of 3-0 wins this past weekend, forward Anna McClung was named to TopDrawerSoccer.com Women's Team of the Week and goalkeeper Julie Eckel earned an honorable mention.

McClung is the first Vol to be named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week since Cheyenne Spade and Carlyn Baldwin were honored on Nov. 4, 2014.

McClung scored one goal in UT's 3-0 win over Navy and another in the Vols’ (3-0-3) 3-0 win over Murray State. Against Navy, McClung scored from the front left corner of the 18 in the 67th minute after an assist from Meghan Flynn. McClung scored in the 71st minute against Murray State on a breakaway up the middle. Through just six games, she has matched her career high for goals in a season (three in 22 games in 2014) and has played a role (scoring or assisting) in five of Tennessee’s nine goals on the year. With three goals and two assists this season, McClung now has eight goals and five assists in her collegiate career.

Eckel continued her dominance in goal this week with a pair of home shutouts over 180 minutes against Navy and Murray State. Eckel made three saves against Navy and two more against Murray State and now has five shutouts over UT’s first six games of the season. She has 28 shutouts for her career and continues her steady climb up UT’s career goalkeeping standings. Eckel currently ranks third all-time among UT goalkeepers in matches played (69), third in starts (67), third in minutes (6,284), second in saves (278), second in shutouts (28), third in victories (40) and second in career goals-against average (0.83).

Tennessee opens SEC play this week against Arkansas (3-2-0) on Friday in Fayetteville, Ark. UT hosts Belmont (1-3-0) on Sunday for its final non-conference regular-season match.

Here's a summary of tonight's game from Herosports.com, a very good sports site if you haven't seen it. It basically underscores the point that the Vols need to start getting more quality chances, which really means better passing and combination play in the attacking half. Good luck, Vols.

"Mid-table obscurity is definitely not the endgame for these two programs trying to outrun their recent reputations in the SEC. The Lady Razorbacks have made a habit of being a thorn in the side of everyone in the league since Colby Hale came in to breathe some life in a stagnant program a handful of seasons ago. But they’ve also found taking the next step and becoming something more than just a talented nuisance a bit harder. They’ve shown well in beating average to above average teams thus far in 2015 but have also shown their limitations in losses to Penn State, and most recently, Rice. Opponents Tennessee have overcome a stormy start to the season to still stand undefeated and with fresh momentum after a pair of 3-0 wins last weekend. The new focus on defense has been a welcome blessing for the Lady Vols given the scattershot offense. Tennessee have largely depended on Amy Neal and Anna Bialczak early, but the duo have just three goals on forty-one shots, with both also topping out at about 39% on their shot on goal ratio. Clearly, the club needs better in the attack if they want to make noise in the SEC, and going on the road to Fayetteville should only hasten that necessity in the league opener."

Kupritz, Eckel Lead Vols Past Arkansas, 1-0 Ariel Kupritz scores in the 34th minute; Julie Eckel and UT D post sixth shutout of the season

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Ariel Kupritz scored in the 34th minute and Julie Eckel was magnificent in goal with her sixth shutout on the year to lead Tennessee to a 1-0 victory over Arkansas on Friday in its SEC opener at Razorback Field.

Tennessee (4-0-3) snapped its three-game losing streak against the Razorbacks (3-3-0). UT is now 12-4-1 all-time against Arkansas.

Eckel (4-0-3) made five saves on the night and punched away or intercepted numerous crosses inside the six-yard box. The fifth-year senior and Vols veteran back line of Susan Ferguson, Gabby Santorio, Kathryn Culhane and Emily Morrow withstood 18 Arkansas shots without breaking.

The Vols did a good job of containing Arkansas' leading goal scorer Ashleigh Ellenwood, limiting her to four off-target shots. The Tennessee defense has allowed just one goal in 690 minutes this season.

Arkansas' Cameron Carter (1-3-0) took the loss after giving up the lone goal and making one save.

The Vols broke through in the 34th minute when Kupritz took the ball to the top left side of the box, made a move to shake her defender and fired a rocket to the right upper 90 for the first goal of her career. Kupritz, who transferred to UT from Miami (Fla.) before the 2014 season and redshirted due to injury, had played 14 career matches without a goal entering Friday.

Gutsy win. Team did not play well, midfield was bad, but Eckel was good, Kupritz had a great strike--and we managed to hold off an average Arkansas team. Wonderful to get the result--something that we didn't do in conference last year. .

Impressive win today over Belmont, 8-nil. Belmont is not good, but we did what good teams do--thump an inferior opponent. Danielle Marcano, who is a freshman but probably our most talented midfielder overall, scored two goals and contributed to a third. Tatum Wagner, another freshman, got her first. Hutson, Ferguson, Bialczak, McClung and Neil also scored. Nice win. Ready to beat auburn a week from today.

The Vols (5-0-3) enjoyed their most explosive offensive performance ever under head coach Brian Pensky and continued their outstanding stretch of stout defense. UT's eight goals were its most since an 8-0 win over Chattanooga on Sept. 19, 2010. Tennessee has allowed just one goal over 780 minutes and the Vols have held opponents scoreless over their last 384 minutes of play.

Senior goalkeeper Julie Eckel (5-0-3) made two saves over 78 minutes to earn the win. Freshman Shae Yanez subbed in with just over 12 minutes left and finished the match without surrendering a goal.

Tennessee took a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute when Amy Neal punched in a deflection of the goalkeeper for her third goal of the season.

Marcano netted the first goal of her career in the 24th minute when Rylie O'Keefe sent a cross in from the left side and Marcano punched the ball in to the right corner of the net. The Vols took a 2-0 lead into halftime with a 9-7 edge on shots.

UT wasted no time adding to its lead in the second half. Thirty seconds out of halftime, Gabby Santorio sent a ball forward to Bialczak, who connected with Cali Hutson on a cross from the right side. Hutson fired from the left side of the box and scored near the right post for her second goal of the season, giving Tennessee a 3-0 advantage.

Belmont switched goalkeepers in the 68th minute when Lindsay Espe relieved starter Stephanie Bukovec. Eack keeper allowed four goals.

The Vols poured on two more goals in the 74th minute. Anna McClung headed in a deep cross from Tatum Wagner at 73:17 and 23 seconds later Marcano punched in her second goal following a pass from Ariel Kupritz and a cross from Wagner.

After assisting on UT's fifth and sixth goals, Wagner scored the first goal of her collegiate career in the 76th minute when she fired from the far right side of the box, over the keeper and near the left post.

Tennessee scored its eighth goal in the 88th minute when Bialczak knocked in a rebound off the keeper, following a deep cross from Christine Creighton. The goal was Bialczak's second on the season.

UT outshot Belmont, 21-8, with a 13-2 edge on shots on goal. Tennessee also had an 8-2 advantage on corner kicks.

The Vols next host Auburn on Sept. 20. That match will have a 3 p.m. start and feature a live televised broadcast on SEC Network.

ECKEL NAMED SEC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

View attachment 99842

For the second time in three weeks, Tennessee goalkeeper Julie Eckel has been named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday.

Eckel posted seven saves in 167:54 minutes of action on the weekend, leading the Volunteers (5-0-3) to consecutive shutout victories over Arkansas and Belmont. She recorded five saves and earned her sixth shutout of the year in Tennessee’s SEC opener at Arkansas on Sept. 11, and held Belmont scoreless for 78 minutes before freshman Shae Yanez entered to play the final 12 minutes and complete the 8-0 rout.

The Cordova, Tenn., native has allowed only one goal in 767:54 minutes this season, while the Vols have held opponents scoreless for the last 384 minutes of play.

Eckel also ranks second in saves (285) and shutouts (29.4) while ranking third in matches played (71) and started (69) by a goalkeeper. This auburn game is a big one for UT. The Vols are young, but we're 1-0 in the conference after beating arkansas (away), and the team is starting to gain some confidence. Auburn is ranked 19th in the country, but I'm not sure rankings mean much at this point--and in fact auburn did not look good last week during a loss to Missouri. This is very much a winnable game if the Vols play well--and it being a home game, it is a game that UT needs to win if it wants to get in the NCAA tourney, as there are still a lot of tough SEC games left to play, including four or five on the road. The Vols need to get some good play out of their midfield, which is hasn't been great this year, partly because it has got young players. If coach Pensky aspires to build a top national program, as he certainly does, bolstering the midfield, getting more talent into that unit, has to be a priority. It would be nice to make a statement in this game.

Auburn at Tennessee , Sunday, Sept. 20, 3 p.m., SEC Network
The Tigers had their shutout streak snapped and suffered a first loss last weekend in their SEC opener against

Both teams have built impressive defensive records at this point in the season, as Auburn has conceded just
