I'm an Apple guy but I don't buy albums (or movies or books) from the iTunes store. I mostly use Amazon then drop them in iTunes where I use iTunes Match to access my entire library on all my devices.
You would always have access to downloading them to a computer using iTunes. I know you can convert ripped albums from from Apples ACC file type to MP3 them move them over to other music management apps. Not sure if that works for iTunes Store purchases. Pretty sure they are DRM free these days though.
