Impact of losing Kyle Alexander (Wes Rucker article)

Unless he becomes a double-double machine who also is a 3 pt specialist, he might have a chance. Otherwise, I don’t think Admiral does anything particularly ‘elite’. Don’t get me wrong, he’s ‘really’ good in a lot of areas, but he’s primarily missing being able to guard quicker, taller players and also doesn’t have explosive athletism.

Really?

I agree with most of what you're trying to say in that he's more of a jack-of-all-trades type player instead of a guy that's got 1 elite skill but the kid is absolutely explosive. If his 3 point shot continues to improve like it has been he's got a future in the league. No doubt in my mind.

The man is a ballplayer who brings it every night. If he does keep improving with his work ethic, Admiral will be an asset to any nba or NFL squad. I would never rule him out of anything he sets his mind to do.

Kyle was missed tremendously. Even if he doesn't have one of his better games, its evident how much he changes our defense. First off, that blob of a center for Loyola wouldn't have scored on Kyle. Secondly, and where he was missed most, was pick and roll defense. Kyle is so good at showing on a ball screen and getting back to his guy. If he's a bit late, he'll block the shot. Fulky and Walker got exposed in this area big time. Either the roller got a basket or it would cause us to go into scramble mode and leave guys open. And lastly is his ability to run the floor on fast breaks. Puts lots of stress on the defense. We still should have one somewhat handily, but he was missed.

We missed him but still should have won. No idea why Grant Williams didn't get the ball more. They couldn't guard him. If Schofield doesn't get in foul trouble, we'd barely miss KA. With both of them off the floor and AS playing soft when he was in, we were in trouble.

They were draped all over Grant. Both within the rules and by fouling. He got it several times and had to kick it back out. Alexander would have relieved some pressure because Grant can find him down low. Walker and Pons don't have much of an offensive game.

Admiral took it aggressively a couple of times and either missed or picked up the BS charge.

That's basketball. Only thing I am thinking about now is how they build on this year. If one player being out causes a 3 seed to lose to a 14, the 3 has more work to do. But I am thankful for how well they played through the season. Yeah, I am disappointed in the loss but it finally seems they are moving in the right direction.

I hate to see kids get run off, but they need more than 1 scholarship to give -- Barnes can coach up players though and these guards need it over the summer -- GW needs a mid range jumper and maybe even a steady 3 point shot to be an all around player -- he can do it with practice and desire -- was an enjoyable season though

Can Jalen Johnson be the get to the rim slasher type we need next year?

That's his game. He's very good at attacking the basket. His outside shooting beyond 15' isn't anything spectacular. Unfortunately when JJ had early minutes in close games this year he looked to have been coached to make an entry pass to the post. He didn't look comfortable, but it could make him better in the long run.

I believe there were a couple of instances when Walker was in that he hedged on a screen but couldn't recover in time. The result bring a couple of layups by his man. I think it's the little things that Alexander brings that this team missed. They seemed to get to the rim with relative ease as well. Definately missed his athleticism in the paint.

Kyle Alexander is the guy we need to worry about leaving early. Many project him as a late 1st round pick. Give loyola credit but with KA we win that game imo

I'm not doubting your information, but I have a hard time believing KA would go in the second round, much less the first... at least, not this year.

I agree that he has the potential to be a first rounder and I'm a big fan of his, but he's not there yet. He still has plenty of room for development.

Needs to work on his handles more than anything.

I don't like this because we are giving TN an excuse. Maybe that's why Virginia loss because they had a hurt player?

Nah.. what if we still lost and KA actually played. Would that make matters worse?

I highly underestimated how Alexander being out would affect the team.

I think we lost about ten points without him, and I believe Virginia was hurt without their best player.

That said, what happened to Carolina and why does Texas AM suddenly look like a professional team?

Weird year.

Its safe to say Kyle Alexander would have made a huge impact on this game. Even though Loyola-Chicago was undersized, they clearly took advantage of his absence. We need a quality back-up for KA. Hopefully one of the freshman will fill this void.
