I just had this happen a few months ago, at the time I was like ef it and got down from the ladder. Luckily the light in the lamp was an LED so it mysteriously came back on by itself. I finally just recently changed it a month ago and had little issue unscrewing the dome. Not sure about the OP's glass but the glass dome I've got is pretty damn thick. It'd be hard to accidentally break it.

Have you tried going into the attic to access the wiring that runs directly to the fixture and pouring chocolate milk in it?
