Saw this about Tennessee and curious how it ranks in the conference and how much other schools declined this year. I believe I heard that most SEC schools were down compared to last season.

Ben_Fred: UT hoops averaged announced attendance of 15,064 per home game this season. Lowest since 04-05 (12,225). Down from last season's 15,475.

But about Tennessee's attendance, lets be honest here.....TBA is WAY to big. Look at the O Dome or Auburns new arena. It's great to know you can always buy a ticket, if we suck or if were good but there is no reason our arena should be that large. TVs are bigger and the picture is cooler now. I live in Jacksboro and don't tend nearly as many games as I do because I'd rather be lazy and set at home but still try to make it to a fair share. I bet a lot of people local do the same as me.

I tend to agree. Personally, I prefer the atmosphere of the smaller gyms.

Agree, it should have been 16-18K max. 15k is actually pretty good but not when you have 5K empty seats every time.

Plus some of the seats at the top at the ends are obstructed and you can only see half the court. No way I'd pay for those seats.

Cameron Indoor wouldn't be nearly as fun if it fit 10,000 more people so I agree with the smaller gyms. Plus, when Florida was going off a few years ago, you can watch the cameras shake because that place was thumping. Smaller gyms are more fun.

Forget that. I like to be able to go without paying someone triple face value. I also don't need to be crammed in between 2 fat guys to enjoy watching a game.

I don't think fewer seats has to necessarily mean smaller seats.

Tennessee has some of the most loyal fans in the nation. I don't think TBA is too big. I think it is really the nicest college on campus arena there is. I think it's embarrassing for places like Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Georgia and especially Florida that they have such rinky-dink arenas and if you'll notice they can't even fill them. Florida has had a great basketball program for 10 or 15 years with two national titles and close to 50,000 students and they can't fill a 12,000 seat arena...we have 28,000 students & a mediocre at best program and yet we put in 15,000+ in every game, plus the Lady Vols have lead the nation in attendance for something like 15 of the last 18 years. Not to mention our football attendance.
WELL DONE VOL FANS!!

The arena size is fine unless you take a downward slide for several more years. Fifteen thousand plus for four years in a row with only one NCAA bid is pretty amazing actually

I'm not sure if this is a priority or consideration when building new arenas or if it's more of a cost recoup / revenue generating measure taken after the fact, but TBA does host concerts for big name artists. Knoxville is on the smaller end of the medium size cities in the US, but Fleetwood Mac aint playin a date in Auburn, Starkville, or Tuscaloosa. And they're more likely to go to Atlanta, Jacksonville, or Little Rock than they are Athens, Gainesville, or Fayetteville. So, there's a need for this type of venue in K'ville.

I still don't understand why it was designed so poorly.

Because the first thing on the list of design features was that it was to be bigger than Rupp Arena.

The massive sink hole that it was built over that sucked down many truckloads of concrete could not have been good for the budget. Also, if I'm remembering acurately, a lot of cured concrete had to be torn out and redone because of structural concerns. I think that it was supposed to cost about $30,000,000 and ultimately cost about $50,000,000.
