Winning at the Rose Bowl against UCLA was big that year. Set the tone for the whole season. UCLA was a top ten team. We went on the road and gave em a Tennessee Dog Whoopin. Doubtful, but I would like to see something like that this year against Oklahoma.

It was a great win. UCLA went into a tail-spin after that game and ended the season with only 3 wins.

Quite the run. Wasn't it the 88 team the started 0-5 and finished by winning the last six in a row? Combine the two and that's a solid stretch of football.

it wa a very good stetch of football but it wast t big a shock,as te 88 team loseing so many games as they were picked to finish alot better but due to over confidence and injuries caused them to underacheive and some bad breaks cost them the first five games

Could be but I believe JM got the exact response he wanted from KD with the Matthews move which was his resignation.

I am not sure if DD made the call on KD or JM but after the WSU beating it was clear that changes needed to be made @ DC & OC.

Here is Matthews's take on the events.

Why Coach Ken Donahue resigned...

Pretty much the same thing. What coach wants to stay on after being demoted? It's a nice way to let him save a little face.

5-6 sure wasn't "my" expectation in 88 after going 10-2-1 in 87. I found the ups & downs of a JM coached team very frustrating.

I did to but after Fulmers inability to beat Fla I figured it was just part two. Then CPF became complacent with the same thred and a cloud of dust!

it is frigging impossible on VN to discuss Majors w/out someone bring up CF, even when it isn't germane to the topic.

Donahue was the reason for the Sugar Vols! Coordinators figured him out and that's why we started losing. Just as with Chavis figuring out speedy LB's is what it was going to take to compete with spurrior.

Took a team that was 5-6 in 1988 and a year later in 1989 he went 11-1, ranked number 5 at the end of the season.

Amazing feat by any standard.

The 1988 team was loaded on offense, they started 0-6 mostly because of a difficult schedule, and a rebuilding defense. In 1989 they weren't much better on defense, but they were incredible on offense, they mostly out scored teams to will 11 games and a share of the SEC title with Auburn and Alabama.

Their only loss was to Bama in Birmingham, and the Vols were robbed the entire game by Jimmy Harper. Lol!

I remember when Majors came in to replace Battle. The first thing he did was change the leather on all the tables in the rehab room from green to orange. Eventually, everything became orange. There was a new sheriff in town...

while we enjoy thinking of those fun years of CJM from the 85 Sugar Bowl until he left (sans 1988), remember that there was a 9 season span that was quite painful. 5, 6, 7 wins were the norm. JM would have never made it in todays cfb world.

keepin it real

9 season span? I don't think it was that many. I may be wrong, I'll look it up.
