Now that spring UV's are (for the most part) complete and the May-June OV schedule continues to build, thought it would be a good time to update the 2024 Recruiting Board. My criteria for including a prospect is some combination of being firmly uncommitted elsewhere (i.e., no longer listening to us), having visited here in 2024 OR in 2023 with an intent to OV, and from reading the tea leaves reciprocal interest from UT staff (i.e., and offer).

I think it's obvious that we're now recruiting at a level we haven't been since the prime Fulmer years. Our current commitment list is superb, highlighted of course by a 5-star QB. The % of prospects who we're NOT going up against perennial CFP contenders is incredibly low, and where we're doing that we're either recruiting against staffs with a rep for strong evals and/or those prospects have the types of traits (length, speed, multi-sport prowess) that way more often than not translates to overperformance vs. ranking/recruitment. Needless to say May-July is going to be a really exciting time and I expect the staff to close at a higher rate than ever on these blue-chip prospects.

For fun, went thru the ESPN 300 for these names. ESPN recruiting/ratings may not be up to par with 0n3 etc, but regardless, the Vols will be talked about A LOT throughout the season as we are getting 10+ easily. It certainly won’t hurt the national perception of Heupels recruiting being in on so many of their top players, 36 of these are in the current top 300 by my count.

I just added DL Bobby Kanka, a Michigan commit who it was reported last night is going to take an OV here 6/21. He's been committed there for a while but did attend the UGA game and has also visited (and will OV to) MSU.

As for the list above, I definitely thought about a handful of those guys but ultimately it seems like none of them are mutually serious targets. That is to say, it looks like Winters for example, who we'd love to land, is about to commit to AU over UGA running a close 2nd. I think we like Jarquez Carter and McNutt too, but despite both of them visiting they never seem to mention us much if at all anymore. On the other hand, I don't think we're truly recruiting the instate CBs Lawrence and Starr or Gooden (who's an IOL I think) very hard at all.

My guess is that some small % of that list will end up coming back onto the board between now and NSD but that the large majority will be committed to other schools by the start of the season without ever having taken an OV.

It's all subjective of course and if someone wants to pound the table for a particular prospect to be added (stipulating that this entire post is meaningless lol) then let's do it!

Already picked up Walton from this list.
Edited to reflect the commitment. Also removed both DB Shamari Earls and DL Caleb Williams, both of whom inexplicably committed to that bottom tier program in Columbia, SC. Williams hasn't explicitly said he won't be taking his currently scheduled OV to Knoxville but I'm making that assumption for now.

Asked how he would would you rank our top 5 Edge targets in order of want and likelihood to land, Callahan said the following:

"As for ranking Tennessee’s top five edge possibilities, that’s a tough one because there are some difficult-to-read players at that position who are considering the Vols. I think Jayden Woods is probably higher on that list than I would’ve thought, though, and Damien Shanklin is fairly high, too. Tennessee obviously really likes Grady, but he might be a tougher pull than some of the others. I think it’s a similar situation with Jared Smith, so I would lean more toward Woods, Christian Gass, Shanklin and Jayden Loftin probably being among Tennessee’s most realistic targets there. But the Vols are obviously going to continue to battle for Grady and Smith, too."

I'm surprised he grouped Gass with the "most realistic targets" group considering he's yet to schedule an OV here and consistently talks about plans without mentioning UT. Shanklin is also somewhat surprising just given that that is a heavyweight battle as much as Grady and Smith are and he's been to campus less than they have. Also curious that he didn't mention Julius Holly...

Added CBs Daryus Dixon and Dijon Lee as per Matt Ray both are expected to be back in town for June OVs. Those are both HUGE swings - UGA in particular want them both badly.

Added to board after taking UV this past weekend and indicating he's going to take fall OVs including one to UT (not set yet but one can imagine it being hard for him to resist coming to see undefeated Vols vs UF and/or then Bama).

Also moved Nasir Wyatt to LB from Edge, although I don't think we're big players there anyway.

*I've heard that the staff not only LOVES Hayward (a feeling which is mutual) but also think he's likely a LB given his frame. That would obviously change how they approach both the LB and S boards...
Will keep a running 865 Live attendee list here to consolidate, since whoever shows that weekend is obviously a VERY serious candidate for us. So far, per VQ:

DL Bryce Jenkins
DL Isaiah Campbell (Clemson commit...for now); I've added him to the board per the 5/3 VQ note on him
WR Jamie Ffrench (tentative, per the 5/3 VQ note on him)
