I'm not disputing or defending what he did but he got punished well beyond the norm.Pearl got the punishment he got because when faced with the allegations, instead of admitting the violation and taking the minor hit, he lied, he asked his assistants to lie and he asked the players involved and their families to lie.

No doubt. The NCAA had him caught red handed. There was zero plausible doubt and that's almost never the case. They had free reign to drop the hammer and they did.
