Fox Sports Knoxville all over that issue this morning.
They are saying that many schools including UT won’t consider Norvell because of a rumored “gambling problem”.

I don’t see this as fair.
As long as he’s not gambling on college football, who cares if he’s at the blackjack tables in Tunica now and then.

Doesn't look like it prevents his team from scoring points.

So he doesn’t bet on football but his ponies don’t come in and he’s a little light paying Tony back? :hmm:

When you should be out recruiting...but you are splitting aces and eights at a table in Tunica or Vegas.

There's a huge difference between going to Tunica every now and then and having a gambling addiction...

Gamblers like drug addicts have a character flaw. A flaw that both metamorphs and manifests itself over time in very negative ways. Will in seeking to increase or recover losses he shaves points from the game, intentionally lose and otherwise bring negative publicity to the program? why gamble on a gambler? Personally, I was unaware of his gambling until very recently. I now say, steer clear of him.

If his gambling is considered to be severe, or appears to be an addiction, you want to stay away from him.

It would be no different than hiring a guy who was a known alcoholic or cocaine addict. Gambling addictions have ruined or disrupted many lives and careers. See Art Schlichter, Pete Rose, Charles Barkley, Allen Iverson and many others.

Why is it "not fair?" UT can select any matter for things they want to consider in hiring a coach.

Didn’t ruin Michael Jordan but he “retired” for a spell during his prime.

Better phrasing than fair would be “doesn’t make sense”.
Is occasional non college sports betting prohibited by the NCAA for coaches?

If it's serious, we should be staying away. I thought we were looking for high character guys?

Again as the days roll by I'm more and more surprised that Neal Brown's name isnt getting thrown around on this board like one would expect - we've exhausted our options and now we're talking about taking an OC who scored an 11 on the wonderlic test, a guy who won 25% of his games at Baylor and a 63 year old washed out SEC HC. Brown is a high character guy, has a lot of energy, is a winner and clearly knows how to run a program the right way.

People with gambling addictions are statistically more likely to have performance related issues at work than those without gambling addictions. Not saying this guy necessarily has an addiction.

Athletes cant even participate in a NCAA BB bracket among teammates but coaches can belly up to a table in Tunica and gamble? Really?

I agree. I really like Brown.

That said I expect us to go with someone like Miles. Brown is going to be good but this is a massive dumpster fire currently. I don't see Fulmer picking anyone that doesn't have experience in the region recruiting. I also don't see him selecting a head coach with limited experience. Miles is the safe hire and that's the route I expect.

Going to Tunica occasionally beats chasing and grooming underage girls at the mall, except in Alabama.

Even the dumbest of the dumb on this forum can see the difference. Intentionally obtuse i suppose.

A blackjack table or any table in a casino would have zero chance of tempting a player of coach to throw a game or mess with the point spread.

I typed the above sentence super slow and with only my index fingers so the slowest on here could hopefully understand.
