Donald Trump in a general election will be disastrous for the Republican party. The is an absolute buffoon and will still get crushed by someone that has more baggage than any candidate in recent memory.
Bush managed to win twice with the left leaning media and a lackluster performance as president.
Barely won against Gore. (some say not at all)
And running against Kerry? Kerry in 2004 was the DNC equal of McCain in 2008. The war was not unpopular at that time, Kerry didn't offer anything new to the table and the press wasn't as eager to go against a sitting President that was still pretty popular.
Let me ask you this. Were even a percent of the vile comments tossed at Romney justified?

No matter who the Rs throw up, the media is going to go after while Hillary gets asked softball questions and treated with fondling adulation.
I seriously don't know why the Ds even bother buying ad time. They get it free on network TV.
Romney was in fact a Muslim, born in Africa, American hating, communist, Manchurian candidate....oh wait that was the conservative attack on Obama

You know, it doesn't matter who the GOP puts up. The left leaning media will crucify them regardless of their stances on the matter.
I don't think this is correct. I think you underestimate the anger the majority of the nation has with the political elite currently in control of both parties. Hillary Clinton is the poster child of that establishment: entitled, ignorant of what happens outside the beltway, and willing to whore herself and her policies out to the highest bidder.
Trump will end up being the man who showed the way, the guy who captured the feelings of the majority towards a failed governing class in this nation. I think his efforts will end up contributing considerably to the eventual Republican winner in the general election.
As for Hillary: you cannot claim to be the solution when you have been a big part of the problem.
Her best hope is to see a Bush or a Kasich on the other side in November.
It depends on the candidate and the stance and the matter.
If its Jeb, he's not going to get much criticism on immigration, and he'd likely end up with a reasonable foreign policy position, focusing on the now and not his brother's errors. He's not a religious ideologue, so things like abortion and gay rights, meh, non factors.
If its Carson, on the other hand, you're right, they will skewer him..... and they will be right to do so.
