KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee senior right-handed pitcher Zack Godley has been selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 10th round (288th overall) of the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

The Bamberg, S.C., native has been UT’s top starting pitcher the past two years after pitching in a team-high 28 games as a reliever in his first year at Rocky Top in 2011. In his three years with the Vols, Godley amassed a 10-10 record and 3.48 ERA, striking out 185 and walking just 63 over 209.2 innings of work.

He saved his best for last, posting an impressive senior campaign in which he had six complete games, more than any other team in the SEC, in 14 starts. Godley led the league with 108.1 innings pitched during the regular season and finished second with 98 strikeouts.

His six complete games are the most by a Vol since Jamie Bennett also had six in 2000, while he also became the first UT hurler to reach triple-digits in innings pitched since James Adkins and Craig Cobb both accomplished the feat back in 2007.

UT has now had 121 players drafted a total of 133 times since the free-agent draft began in 1965. The Vols have had at least one player selected in each of the last 30 drafts, with 114 selections during that span for an average of 3.80 per year.

Godley is the 51st Vol ever picked in the top 10 rounds. He has now been drafted twice, previously going in the 50th round (1,514th overall) to the New York Mets out of high school in 2009.
