KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – After leading Tennessee to its first season-opening series sweep since 2004 with a trio of three-hit performances, junior outfielder P.J. Polk has been named the first Southeastern Conference Player of the Week of the 2010 campaign. The Murfreesboro, Tenn., native was 9-for-12 on the weekend, good for a stellar .750 batting average.
In addition to his nine hits, Polk also walked three times to allow him to reach base safely in 12 of his 16 plate appearances. The 5-9 speedster posted a tremendous 1.083 slugging percentage with four doubles and five singles, while also adding a pair of stolen bases, two RBIs, a sacrifice fly, as assist from his position in left field and a team-high seven runs.
The award is the second of Polk’s career, as he also earned the honors in week nine last season after hitting for a .455 average in the Volunteers’ series win on the road against top-ranked LSU.
Tennessee will hit the road for the first time in the 2010 campaign this weekend as it travels to face No. 10 Oregon State, Feb. 26-28, in Corvallis, Ore. The Beavers are currently in the middle of a four-game set against Hawaii in Honolulu and are 2-0 on the season after winning the first two games.
