Robert Hubbs announces he’ll stay at UT

Tennessee basketball team got some welcome news Thursday when Robert Hubbs announced he would return to the University of Tennessee and continue his collegiate basketball career with the Vols.

Many thought Hubbs would follow fellow sophomores Darius Thompson and AJ Davis in asking to be released from his scholarship, but a meeting with new Head Coach Donnie Tyndall and three of his assistants must have convinced Hubbs, and his family, that remaining at Tennessee was the best decision for the young man’s future.

Robert Hubbs to return to Tennessee

Freak touched on the Wednesday meeting in the FreakNotes sections on the Volnation homepage, with bits from Hubbs’ mother and father on how the meeting with Tyndall and staff went.

“The visit went great. It was very special to us that the whole staff was here. We thought it would just be coach Tyndall and maybe one assistant. When they left, Robert looked at us and said he was still a Tennessee Vol.”

Hubbs’ father said a final decision should come soon. “He is just going to take things one day at a time, but I think a decision will come fairly quick. I don’t want to put a timetable on it, but whatever he wants to do our family is going to support it.”

Vol fans didn’t get to see much of the highly-touted freshman in action this past season as he was shut down early in the year due to a lingering shoulder problem. But he was a 5-star recruit coming out of high school and certainly provides a boost to what is becoming quite the back court for next season’s hoops team.

Hubbs joins recent signees Kevin Punter and Detrick Mostella at the two-guard position, though Hubbs may be able to slide over to the three in certain situations. Last year’s backup PG Darius Thompson has still not declared his intentions, but Tyndall is after JUCO PG and former Southern Miss signee Rasham Suarez to either replace Thompson or add depth to at the lead-guard spot.
