FreakNotes: Kirkland update; Commits in action; Josh Smith may play

Tennessee Vols Football News

August 28, Monday

  • Happy Monday, everyone. Can you believe we’re only a week away from the season-opener against Georgia Tech. Only 7 days! — Countdown thread.
  • Off Topic: First off, who watched the McGregor vs. Mayweather fight? I’d love to get your reaction. Was it entertaining? Did it play out like you thought it would? What’s next for Connor McGregor? Leave a comment below and let me know.
  • If you missed it over the weekend, Darrin Kirkland, Jr., the Vols’ starting middle linebacker is out indefinitely with a knee injury. He apparently injured it during practice on Friday. We may know more soon as he’s expected to undergo more tests sometime today. My take? I don’t want to talk about it.
  • Butch Jones was at Baylor School on Friday to watch Vol commits Cade Mays and Brendon Harris. — Player threads: ’18 TN OL/DL Cade Mays (UT commit 7/13/15)’18 TN DB Brendon Harris (UT Commit 5/19/17)
  • Check out this touchdown pass, caught by Tennessee wide receiver commit Jatavious Harris. — Player thread: ’18 GA WR/S Jatavious Harris (UT commit 4.23.17)
  • Former Vol LaTroy Lewis scored a 65-yard touchdown against Dallas.
  • I found this to be an interesting statement from Austin Price: “I said the DK suspension rumor was false. Never said anything on DR.” — Is the emphasis here on Kirkland or Richmond? Thoughts?
  • Tennessee wide receiver Josh Smith was first reported to be out 4-8 weeks with a broken collarbone, but that report turned out to be false. Last night, Butch said Smith might actually be available to play on Monday. — “I think we’ve learned through the Josh Smith injury (against making evaluations too early). There’s actually a possibility that Josh could be available for the game Monday night.”
  • Before his injury, Tennessee defensive tackle Kahlil McKenzie earned the No. 2 grade among returning Power 5 interior defenders with less than 200 defensive snaps, according to ProFootballFocus. He also ranked No. 2 against the run and No. 1 in two different pass rush productivity stats. — Forum discussion: Interesting advanced stats on McKenzie from PFF

  1. Hold Tuttle out till Indy State for a few snaps. Have him ready to go vs UF.

  2. I think everyone knew McGregor was done by at least the 8th. I was surprised he hung in there until the 10th. He came out after the bell and couldn’t keep his gloves up.
