Jones: Vols already making more big “splash plays” on offense

Last year, one of the things discussed ad nauseum was the Vols’ ability to create big plays on offense. It was a problem; one Butch Jones spoke of often.

After the fourth game of the season last year Jones said, “You need big chunk plays. We need somebody to turn a 5-yard hitch into a 35-yard gain.”

Butch touched on it again after Tennessee’s end-of-the-year victory over Kentucky in November. “We see what happens when we create big plays,” Jones said. “It creates momentum and touchdowns obviously.”

But things are changing this year.

Just after Tennessee’s first scrimmage, Butch told a local radio show, The Nation, on Sunday night that he’s already seeing more big plays this year than he did last year.

“I just left a staff meeting and we had all of our explosive plays so far in training camp and we probably had more wow plays already in a short period this training camp than we did all of last year from practice, to even live game situations and game day.”

Brick by brick.
