Because Freak is awesome, he has sliced up all the offensive and defensive plays for Tennessee. Which gave me the idea to get to work on some film breakdown. Tonight, we break down the Hurd touchdowns.
Touchdown #1
Tennessee has added more pulls to their read option run game and it worked beautifully. Here we go with the "All-22" look and see Thomas and Robertson pulling to spring Hurd on the TD.
This is a read option play where Dobbs has to see what the DE does. Kendrick crashes in on the DT, leaving the DE unblocked. This is designed. Dobbs correctly reads the play and Hurd is off to the races.
With the defense held by the read option, this becomes a simple battle of 4 on 4. Robertson goes low and does a nice job of getting his man out of the play. Great job by Kerbyson forcing his man to be stuck in the middle. Wolf doesn't get a lot, but he gets enough. This plays shows Jalen's balance.
Here is a slow down version so you can see the blocks develop
I love how quickly Thomas explodes. You can tell why the staff likes him. He has quick feet moving side to side when it comes to pulling.
Watch these blocks by Thomas and Smith. This is how you finish plays in football. It's a great job by Thomas using leverage and effort by Smith. Hurd gets the stats and the glory publicly, but in the film room all praise goes to the blocking.
Kamara Touchdown #1
First things first, DeBord throws in a wrinkle. He throws in an unbalanced line.
The line left to right goes: Kendrick-Kerbyson-Robertson-Thomas-Weisman-Wolf
This one is fun because double pull power plays are fun. DeBord is getting Kamara to the outside and he must love what he sees when they overload to the wrong side.
Next, you see the play develop. I love how quickly Weisman gets to his guy and Kamara smartly goes with the play design. Watch what Robertson does to his guy.
Hurd Touchdown #2
Hurd's TD was simply power football. Not really much to break down, so here is a simple gif to show some power football. Interesting to note UT did go under center for this with a TE and lead blocking FB.
Hurd Touchdown #3
This is great play execution and great vision. I want you notice how everyone on BGSU's defense is standing up not ready for the play. I also want you to focus on Coleman Thomas.
Three things here
Three things here:
1) Alex Ellis is a man here. Taking on the DE, Ellis lets Hurd get to the outside. This is great technique on how to block.
2) Coleman Thomas again uses his football IQ. He goes low on the faster man and takes him out of the play.
3) Jalen Hurd is a freaking beast.
Kamara Touchdown #2
This was the talk of VolNation. Kamara was great here, but it was the blocking scheme that set him free.
Three things in the next gif:
1. Weisman has my favorite block of the night. Great job pulling and setting the edge.
2. Josh Smith finished two blocks for touchdowns. Again, this is why the coaching staff loves him. Great job by him.
3. Kamara is good at football. That's an NFL cut and great vision. That's not an easy run.
Dobbs TD #1
Dobbs' patience finally pays off. He does a great sell job on the read and explodes for a TD. Let's look at the play design
Another thing that helps is the defensive formation that BGSU lines up. They have the DE in a wide nine and three guys on the other side of the balls looking for Hurd to run left. This leaves a lot of space. We also see the defense flow enough to the left that they are late coming back over to the play.
Watch Kendrick in the gif. He does a great job finding his man, exploding off the line, and finishing the block.
If you want to see the impact of DeBord, look at where Kendrick is at. This didn't happen last year. The offensive linemen are quicker and more explosive, which leads to bigger plays for the running game.
