I'm not starting this thread because I want/don't want Zook as our DC. Like most I've grown tired of all the speculation on the new DC. Until Dooley or Hart announce it I'm taking everything as a rumor.

My friend said something earlier about Zook giving Florida our plays back in the day. I found an article about it but I can't tell if there is a writers biased or info left out. I'm 27 and this was said to have happened in the early 90's so I'm clueless on this. So I am asking my "Eldervols" to drop some knowledge on the kids and explain what happened if anything. :hi: Thanks guys

Zook was DC at UF at the time of faxgate. Jack Sells was the UT employee that sent the faxes to Zook. Zook and Sells were at UT together at one time though. This was before faxgate.

Damn, I had no clue there was this much of a misconception about this whole ordeal. Zook didn't send, he received.

A former player and coach, Jack Sells, attempted to fax Ron Zook a playbook with formations, audibles etc from a Kinko's on the strip while Zook was a defensive asst at Florida. An employee figured out what was happening and contacted the AD. Zook claimed he had no idea about it but later admitted he was in on it.

1991: "Faxgate"

In the week before the 1991 game, media reports began circulating that former Tennessee assistant coach Jack Sells, who had been fired before that season for his role in recruiting violations, had allegedly faxed Florida defensive coordinator Ron Zook, himself a former Tennessee assistant, the Vols' offensive gameplan. At first, both Zook and head coach Steve Spurrier denied receiving any information, though Zook soon clarified his statement and said that Sells had sent him a fax of newspaper clippings about the upcoming game, which he had immediately destroyed.[29]

Florida won the contest 35–18 behind 245 yards and 3 TD's from Gator QB Shane Matthews and 5 Vol turnovers,[30] but the "faxgate" controversy continued after the final whistle. A follow-up newspaper investigation in Knoxville located an employee of a local Kinko's copy center who said that he had noticed Sells faxing copies of a UT "playbook" and insisted that Sells stop the transmission after 10–15 pages had been sent. The employee had saved the fax cover sheet, which detailed a transmission sent 3 days before the UF-UT game by a "Jack Sells" to a "Ron Zook" at a Gainesville telephone number.[31]

While Tennessee athletic director (and former Gator quarterback and head football coach) Doug Dickey was not happy about the incident, both Phil Fulmer and Steve Spurrier downplayed its importance. Spurrier pointing out that UT gained over 400 yards of offense (including 392 passing yards) in the game and joked that it certainly didn't seem like his defensive staff had any inside information. For his part, Fulmer later admitted that the UT staff had copies of the Gators' offensive playbooks at the time.[32] An SEC investigation concluded without punishment.

Jack Sells, the person at the center of the incident, left the coaching profession and successfully sued Kinko's for privacy violations, though he had to leave Knoxville after being assaulted by an angry Vols fan.[33] After a stint as an assistant coach in the NFL, Zook succeed Spurrier as the Gators' head coach in 2002. He was reluctant to talk about "Faxgate" during his tenure at UF (2002–2004), though he did disclose that Sells' infamous transmission had actually been a set of hand-drawn Volunteer offensive plays, but insisted that they "were so immaterial, and it made no difference and had no relevance, it was nothing."

I think I might be in the minority on this because I see it all the time but I hate that "gate" is added to so many things nowadays. Just seems pretty lame to me.

Carry on...

Well honestly I had no clue anything like this happened. I probably just heard him wrong. As I said when this happened I was 7 and back then there wasn't a message board like VN to get all the factual info about the program everyday:p

Could you imagine if that happened now????

I have no doubt that the ordeal was blown out of proportion, but like I've said before . . . How dumb do you have to be to even be in on a caper that includes faxing something from a Kinko's.

Are we suprised as peope said we would be. Forget faxgate for a moment. Is this a good hire. Homerun hire. Or just completely a all around bad move. From a dc and recruiting standpoint.

So basically he will get great recruits in here but he's not good coaching them. Or he's not good at game calling

We would be better off with Steele than Zook. Most of these young kids have never really heard of Zook or seen him be successful at anything. If they go back and research his past, they won't be very impressed either. If UT doesn't hire Zook, and we shouldn't, he will be at the mid-major coaching level. JMO, and for Zook's sake, I hope I'm wrong about him.

Can't be Zook. We don't need jerks devoid of character. Don't make me drive up there from Louisiana and start burning tires and throwing bricks.

Now since he is considered for our dc he is an amazing coach, when a week ago if someone would have started a thread about him being good everyone would have made comments about how much talent he had but couldn't win with it. I'm not saying he is a bad coach because he isn't at all but let's also not act like he would be our savior and we wanted him this whole time.
