Zona Gonna Try Him (JG at QB)

Give away a game to Alabama and I can never forgive it! No excuse. Just leave the planet JG, please.

This is my own fault. I know how we have Vols player haters on this forum who look to disparage players at any and every opportunity. I started this thread to wish JG good luck despite his failings and disappointments at the UT. And I still hope things work out great for him in the NFL. But the outcome of the thread is that player haters decided to detour from at least trying to be nice, to jackhammering the guy. I was a fan of his, especially after the Auburn game, where he practically put on a clinic. But even I soured on him as time wore on, though not to the degree of some here. But enough for me to join the chorus of wanting Brian Maurer or Strout, and later Bailey. But I never irrevocably hated the guy as some of you do, and I harbored a grudging hope he'd turn the corner, almost to the very end. Like many others, I was glad he left, though I still blame Pruitt & Co. for never providing him a true QB coach. I also blamed Pruitt's lame, predictable offense, and the porous OL. I kept thinking JG got short-changed in a program that was a mess and getting messier. With all that, I still hope things work out for him, as I see no purpose in perpetually hating on the player. Especially one, who far as I know, has never uttered a single bad word about the UT despite his treatment here, not a word. Which, to me, marks him as a higher quality person than the perfect unforgiving haters who with great zest point out his short-comings as if it is a holy mission to do so.

I will never understand the hate that JG gets here.

It's not his fault that Pruitt trotted him out there even though he never should have and it is Butch's fault that he took the beatings early in his time here.

I honestly think that it is all in his head and that he is most likely a much better QB than he showed on the field, but his confidence was shot with all the big hits he took early.

In a nutshell, I blame both Butch and Pruitt for his issues and JG is just a victim of circumstances and got way too much hate for it.
The reason I disliked JG was from the get-go in his 1st game as a freshman vs. Georgia Tech. Standing on the sidelines "pouting" liked a spoiled brat because Dormandy got the start. In almost all cases, a true freshman rarely gets a start over a QB who's been in the coaches system for a year or more like Dormandy had been. His actions were a distraction to the entire team and the results reflected his babified ways. The worst years in UT football history imo and I rarely looked forward to a game he was starting in. Just my two cents but I'm damn sure not alone. Go Big Orange !!!

Woodsman, you started a thread about JG several weeks ago and myself and a couple of others accused you of starting a thread on JG just to cause controversy. I may or may not have been correct on that. You actually may have been naïve enough on this subject to think it would be a good conversation thread. But here you have done it again and got the same results. You know this is the definition of insanity on this subject, right? ;)

Now I do agree with you about the personnel hatred towards JG of some posters is not necessary and do not wish him ill will in his future but I do understand where they are coming from and why. I called him some bad names myself many times but I do think it was more Pruitt kept starting him for reasons we will probably never know. This also was the definition of insanity and one of the reasons he is, thank goodness, no longer the HC. So JG is in our rear view mirror now and needs to stay there.

JG was "All Vol" while he was here. He gave his all every game, it was not his fault that the offense tried to throw the ball down the field which required the offensive line to actually block someone which they were not capable of doing.
Excuses are the bricks that build a house of failure.

Truth is JG wasn't what everyone thought he was. He played private school ball in NJ and his numbers didn't match his ranking. Not his fault but it was all manufactured.

Wish him the absolute best but I think his time in the NFL will be short-lived

Anything is possible. Nathan "I threw 5 interceptions in the first half for the Bills" Peterman is currently on the Bears roster. Close to $5m in career earnings. JG took worse beatings than Rodney King.

I sincerely hope that nothing but good things happen for JG, nothing but good things. He picked the UT over OSU, which for him might have been a severe miscalculation, given th mess here at he time. Now, with hopefully, competent coaching, he may straighten up and fly right. So unlike some, who will laugh and even mock the idea that JG will turn out to be a surprisingly serviceable NFL QB at least, I hope he does that and more.

Incredible. The kid has certainly had his fair share of opportunities. I hope he becomes a success story.

JG had no QB coach under Butch. He had 4 or 5 different offensive coordinators here. I know it’s easy to say he wouldn’t have been any good at OSU. But one has to wonder what would have been if he could have gotten some actual coaching at OSU.
Well, my guess is that he would not have been above Dwayne Haskins, Joe Burrow or Justin Fields and probably would’ve transferred to Rutgers or another school.

Maybe. I would still have liked to see what he could have been under a real coaching staff though. He at the very least would have had good offensive lines.

He didn’t give the game away. We still would have been down even if we would have scored. You act like that was the last play of the game. Just stop with the idiocy.

I would like to have seen him with a consistent coach his entire career. Despite what a lot of people on here may say, Jim Chaney is a very solid offensive coach who has coached quite a few very good QBs.

Hard to believe people still blame everyone but JG. O-line, coaching, WR, you name it.

You'd think they would Just keep their focus on defending Milton .

Matt Simms also somehow stuck around pro football for almost 8 years, being on the Jets for 3 seasons then bouncing around a few teams and practice squads from 2015-2019, and started for the Atlanta Legends in the short lived AAF.

I posted the thread not for controversy, rather because I came across an article that seemed to be good news for an ex-Vols player. I stumble on many articles about the Vols, some of which I share on VN. I do it because I think Vols news is cool, and figure even if it is only one other person than myself, someone else on VN thinks it's cool too. Now, not everybody is going to like Vols news, or even specifically, the news I share. The thing is, I don't really care, I just like to share. And then at times play defense. And for the record, others pop JG up periodically, almost always to inject some snide remark about him. Case in point, very recently, mention was made of how well Hooker looked in practice, someone threw an unnecessary anti-JG, comment out, kind of sneaking it in there. So while I agree, we need to put JG in rear mirror, VN, being VN, won't let that happen. The hate is too strong. Long live VN!

Oh one thing, for the one who asked, his game is:
The Cardinals will play at Cincinnati Friday in a preseason-opening game for both teams.

Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. EDT at Paycor Stadium.

Guarantano and former Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley will play for the Cardinals Friday.

Based on 5 seasons of college film, I cannot understand any NFL coach let JG throw late to a starting WRer. They are taking a real chance of losing them for an extended period of time. Them league DBs know how to hit breaking up passes.
See, no downing JG.

Dear God was it only five years???

I would have sworn that JG was around long enough to be granted tenure.

Jarrett Guarantano to make NFL debut

The dude drove me insane just standing there in the backfield, I don’t remember ever screaming at the television “JUST THROWN THE DANG BALL” before him.
At the same time he was one tough kid, I remember wondering several times if he was going to get carted off the field, he would get up and do it all over again. He definitely gave his all for questionable coaches.

I actually hope the guy makes the roster.

Careful, bub, somebody might accuse you of pulling a WoodsmanVol.
