Zee Spearman USA Basketball article

“There is no helpside [in 3x3]. We aren’t in gaps, we stay on our matchup the whole time, but in 5x5 you have to be in your gaps and helpside always, so that’s a little adjustment for me,” Spearman said. “It’s helped me a lot with playing defense more aggressively and more up on the ball … It’s helped me be better in the one-on-ones, too.”

An excellent article! The writer kept her side sparse, and pretty much let Zee tell her own story. That's rare these days--especially from someone so young!

Jane Kenny. Gonna watch for that name.

watched Argentia and Canada games re USA and they lost against Canada, but the refs gave the USA team no breaks (understated) and quick hand steals were frequently called fouls. but enjoyable and both would have been easier wins if free throws would have been made.

I feel like the balance is a bit too cooked in the direction of perimeter shots with the 2/1 ratio, tho. Perimeter shot worth relatively 1.34x more, but is paint offense 1.34x easier...? Perhaps it is. (either way, mid-range shots go from being bad in 5x5 to being awful here, being only worth 1 point)

It seems like points scored is the primary tiebreaker between teams with the same # of wins, so it may end up mattering for bracket seeding.

Game 2 @ 12:55AM EST will be on a new session,

vs. Philippines, who lost 17-19 in their first game vs. Chile.

Tight game so far, but USA will be in the bonus for the last 4 and a half minutes, and this Philippine team has been foul-happy

edit: Double-bonus now. 2 FTs and possession for every foul.

Looked to me like the Philippine girls got jobbed repeatedly by the refs.
I'm sure the event organizers understand the benefit of keeping that U$A audience for the balance of the tourney.

the level of contact permitted is one adjustment for new players to the format. Defense against driving player is simply collusion! and learning to "slow down" in taking shots even with the short-time clock. set your feet (smile)

BTW Rekea Jackson was on a national team playing as a freshman at Miss State with Madison, not yet committed to NC State and the then pesky point/shooting guard from Louisville who excelled in the format.
