CPA's season ended on Nov 21st. I assume that means Kiffin has never seen Mason play except on tape. Wonder what coach(es) were checking him out prior to the Kiffin hire if any.

I think he would probably play TE. If you look at USC they are big physical TE's who are athletic. That is what kiffin wants to do here. We have Cottam who fits that mold but I don't think Douglas or Warren are.

Stocker fits that mold as well. He was somewhat disappointing last year but has huge potential. I think he will thrive under Kiffin.

Mistake IMO. Haven't seen him play football, but he didn't impress me much on the hardwood.

He might have played poorly in the one game you saw his play. But to say he has no future on the hardwood leads me to believe you dont know what you are looking for. I am a high school basketball coach and trust me he can play college basketball. He is a great basketball player. Now, I have never seen him play football. But I will agree that if he has pro aspirations then football could be his best route. He has the size and athleticism.

Kiffin was in town not long ago and visited him at CPA. I believe it was the same time frame he talked to Rogers and Gordon.

Kiffin specifically targeted him.

One word.

GATES

Antonio Gates is exactly who i thought of when i saw this guy. He started playing football when he was junior so he is still really raw im sure. With his size and athleticism who knows what he'll do if he plays college football. And i go to Tennessee Martin, trust me zach you want to play sec football over ovc anything.

for those without a subscription---

he has gotten otherworldly praise from those close to him.

he's got good feet and mobility from his basketball background.

he has approx. 30 basketball offers, but apparently knows he has more potential in football.

"He just has tremendous skills and speed to be a big man. He actually ran the ball this year and averaged almost 9 yards a carry. He had 435 rushing yards and 9 TD's on 53 rushes. Z also had 34 catches for 460 yards and 7 TD's. He pretty much did it all for us this season."

that's his coach on Scout

link: Scout.com: Who is TE Zaccheus Mason?

he projects as a tight end and apparently Cutcliffe wanted him, but Clawson and crew fell off him.

if he had been playing football all along, he could have possibly been a solid 4* if not a 5*. with basketball skills, you have to expect good hands.

one of his h.s. coaches (Ernie Conwell) was an NFL tight end. so he's probably gotten some decent coaching.

That has to be good...having a coach that was a NFL TE. I like the possibility of getting this guy on campus and turning him into a star.

New video out on Z!

he jumped from a 1* to a 3*, but he was largely overlooked by colleges.

when I read about him and saw his physical stats, it made me think about how people always mention the hypothetical of Lebron James playing football.

He has remarkable speed for his size. He makes me think of the big USC tight-ends. The real USC.

Scout.com: "Z" Mason talks visits

where will he go?

"I am going to the school that is the most together and play for a championship. You have to all play together and take up for each other. I want to play for those type of guys."

I'd love to see this guy in ORANGE, but I expect him to be a hot topic of conversation wherever he goes.

Here's a new article about Z. He talks about liking Ole Miss and UT.

Z factor: UT likes Mason's move to tight end : Football Recruiting : GoVolsXtra.com

Not that many people know any better, but Dave Hooker seems to basically read Scout/Rivals and then give his own summary of what he's just read. It's a real shocker for him to break any news and not just retell someone else's story.

For people without subscriptions, that article is pretty much a retelling of earlier pieces. So if you lack a subscription, you can go there to get a synthesized report.

From the GVX article:

"I know he was real excited when Coach (Lane) Kiffin came at watched him at a basketball game," Matthews said. "He wasn't sure what was going to happen in the transition."

Excited about Kiffin, yes. But Mason admits he's still a bit unsure about the Vols and probably a bit more comfortable with Ole Miss.

"I don't know much about UT because they had the coaching change," said Mason, who is being recruited by assistant coach James Cregg.

UT, however, has proximity on its side and the lure that comes with playing for an in-state school.

"I guess it's a big factor for my family to be able to come see me play and it not be a big issue," Mason said.
