You’re the coach: how do you fix the offense?

Go back and review tape of the UNC victory--in which we scored 89 and shot 54 percent and made 9 of 20 3-point shots--and see where
we've regressed. Everybody shot well in that game. Our shooting has been awful in recent games. Why?

I mean this as a serious response: I would not "fix" the offense at any cost to our defense.

I'm still more concerned about what LSU's players did to our defense. Many times one-on-one we looked lead-footed in comparison to their quickness.

Curious to everyone’s opinions on how to fix our offense. It’s clearly what is holding this team back.

To me the “shoot if you are open” philosophy needs to go. There are too many players launching 3s that can’t shoot them. Seems as though Vescovi, Powell, ON, and Chandler should have the green light, the rest not so much. We should be throwing the ball into the post and kicking out for the 3 instead of just passing around then launching a 3.

It’s probably best if JJJ plays the 4, even if it means Fulky comes off the bench. JJJ needs to play around the basket and not out on the perimeter.

Powell needs more minutes on the floor, Vescovi needs to shoot more, Chandler needs to drive to the goal with the option to dump it off if he doesn’t have a shot. And I know BHH is lost on defense but he can score so he needs 15 mpg.

You’re the coach, what do you do?
Well, here’s my take. Coach Mears had shooters and he had support staff, and he had a good ball handler and free throw shooter at point guard. Tn has the point guards, we have shooters and we have those that should be support staff, the defensive specialist or rebounder. Each player needs to have a role or identity, and they work to excel at that. I coached youth ball and picked the old coach’s brain a few times and he preached this. That creates an identity and eases the pressure of someone jacking up an open shot, missing and then trying to shoot through it. Just my take. This team has no identity and the inconsistency comes from not having true roles.

No guarantee…UCLA who is a blue blood was offering Top 5 money and got turned down by multiple coaches before finally circling back ti Cronin, which has worked out, but wasn’t saw at the time as some great hire.
A 5 million dollar check doesn't guarantee a good hire but it significantly raises the odds.

I stop some of the poor three point shooters from shooting threes. Figure out who I have on the team that can take the ball mid-range and to the hoop and score a high percentage of the time. I think the huge key to this team is players being able to knock down the open shot and make free throws. If you can't do that nothing a coach can do.

Keep shooting.
