Well at least that's over, right?! Let's get the bad out of the way first. Bad team is bad. Not really going out on a limb for that one, but we were who we thought we were.

Offense: Really thought JG took steps this year. It's his team, they respond to his thoughnes and he deserves to be the starter going forward. Felt we showed major improvement in the WR core. Less dropped balls, better in 1v1 situations. Josh Palmer is a prime example, went from Mr. Dropit to catching everything. TE is bad, DWA is solid and can be good going forward. It's his first year in the big leagues. The other two? I hope they enjoy holding pads in practice and clip boards on Saturdays because they aren't what we're looking for going ahead. O-line... I'm not wasting time with that. I assume you watched the same games I did. Running back was solid. Ty is a good SEC back. Jordan runs hard as well. We'll be fine here going forward.

Defense: Secondary improved as the year went along, that's a testament to JP and staff's coaching ability. I think the D-line looked better as well. They at least had a game or two. Granted, when you don't work out for two years this is what you get. LB.. What a group... I could write a whole new post about them. Bituli looked, as a Mizzou O-lineman said during that game, "soft". DKjr returned to form. Biggest get of the off season for JP. Felt Ignont looked better as did Sapp. Overall, I'd say the defense was better as a unit but still left a lot to be desired.

Staff: I really appreciate what they got out of the worst team in Tennessee history. We made adjustments for the first time in years. You can tell these guys teach the game and demand excellence. Definitely need this recruiting cycle to further evaluate their prowess on the trail, but given their track record I think we're fine here.

So in review, we suck again. Not as bad as 2017. Left a W on the field in SC. Still going to take a year or two to wash the "Butch" off the players. Those that don't adapt should start applying to Carson-Newman, UTC, UTM, MTSU etc... Going forward look for the team to get bigger, look more confident, and have an edge. Also don't be surprised if there are quite a few transfers this off-season.

Thanks for reading if you made it this far! Please leave critiques and encouragement if you are so inclined. Above all else GO VOLS!!!

I felt Butch recruited 4&5 star players to cover up his coaching inability. He figured they would carry him. Now we have a real coach and staff that know football so I'm anxious for next season. I didn't expect a lot this year. Just my 2 cents worth.

I do have a beef with the coaching staff on special teams.

I don't understand how they did not adjust to the "rugby style" kick that everyone does to us because the are afraid of Callaway. Too many times Callaway let the ball bounce instead of fair catching and trying to prevent the ball from rolling down the field. This happened during the entire season. There had to be 1000 yards are "ball rolling" on punts that we should have eliminated.

If Calloway couldn't down the ball, why not have an up-back (someone in front of Callaway) to catch them when they were short before the bounce.

These little details should be obvious to the coaching staff, if they are even remotely obvious to me.

The positive: At the Florida game, two young lasses from the class of 2017 took a shine to me. This tickled my gizzard. I'm old enough to their grandfather. If you witnessed or read about the game, then you should understand this being the highlight.

The negative: Meh, I don't care to write it up...

Good write-up.

Prepare for a million people telling you that JG was the worst QB in UT history and solely responsible for all of our problems.

I agree with most of what you said other than Bituli being "soft." That's a huge stretch. Bituli is easily our best defensive player who isn't graduating. He led the team in tackles and 2nd place isn't even close to him. I thought DK Jr struggled more than Bituli this season. Hopeful that with another healthy offseason, DK Jr can return to form.
