Year 6 same excuses

He isn’t that good at evaluating QBs if we’re being honest. He chose Milton over Hooker, Nico wasn’t good, lucked into Aguilar being the only QB available. Faizon is young so we’ll see but it’s not off to the best start

Milton had a better NFL career than a lot of other Tennessee QBs, Nico hasn’t been good anywhere so that’s not Heupel’s fault, and Faizon - while he needs to see the field better which will come with experience - hasn’t thrown a pic yet through 4 games as a true freshman. So I don’t know really what you’re talking about other than you’re butthurt over losing to the #1 team in the country.

If Heupel doesn't do something with Elarbee and Halzle then his time here is done.

End of the day though, he's done really what he was hired to do here...take a program that was completely broken and humiliated and put them back in the national conversation consistently.

Joe, I think what he is trying to say is that after 6 years expecting to lose 3-4 games is not what we should have to expect. His points about team and staff not being consistent seem pretty much right on. As I see it "building" the program has taken a backseat to trying to win now. Maybe with Brandon coach is starting to think "build". But there is no excuse after 6 years to have an o-line preform like this on is doing.
I get that. I just take some of it as rather go back to what we had. We’re not getting blown out, or going winless in conference at least.

While I'm unhappy with how the offense played yesterday, I'm still optimistic that we win 9+ games this season. Also, complaining about a year where we made the college playoff may be a bit unreasonable.

Every team we play saw how bad our O line is and how lost our qb is who refuses to throw the ball. He will be under constant pressure from here out. He can accept the line in front of him is dog s*** and start seeing the field better and taking advantage of every single opportunity to make a play or run for his life like yesterday and be just another part of the problem. Based on yesterday it could be a very long, disappointing season….again.

Fortunately, every team doesn't have Texas's front 7 and Will Muschamp who is an incredible DC even if he wasn't a great head coach. I also expect Brandon to improve with time.

I’m sure this will be an unpopular take but I don’t care anymore. This saturday was the first time since Pruitt and Dooley years that I’ve felt completely numb and just beyond tired of the same lousy performances we’ve seen under Huepel. I don’t care that Texas was ranked #1, I am beyond tired of hearing that Faizon is 18 years old but most of all I’m beyond sick and tired of Huepels team always having an excuse. Last year it was the defense being abysmal, year before was Nico wasn’t any good and now It’s we have a freshman QB with an awful O-Line. I know that sounds negative but it’s just the reality at this point. Just because we aren’t as bad as the Dooley or Pruitt teams, doesn’t mean our fan base has to settle for mediocrity. There is no serious football program who contends for championships that has the red flags Huepel is showing and has BEEN showing. At some point, Tennessee fans have every right to be tired of being told to be patient. We’ve been patient. We’ve supported this program through some of the worst years imaginable, and we STILL show up every MF Saturday.
We spend the money.. we pack Neyland,
we support this program through EVERYTHING. And time and time again, we’re the ones left disappointed.

I question a lot of the roster decisions/ staff decisions every year and they seem to always be proven right on the field. We need an administration and coaching staff willing to do whatever it takes to win in today’s college football.
There is ZERO excuse for Tennessee to be in a position where we have to start a true freshman QB and then allow him to get sacked 10 times. I don’t care how good the other team’s defensive line is. Ten sacks is actually insulting to our fan base.

We are in an era where its results driven. Every year is a new year. Can’t bank on guys coming back or building for the future in this landscape. Our team shouldn’t have the holes in this roster that we do in year 6. We also shouldn’t lead the league or come close to leading the league in penalties every season. I’m just rambling at this point but I don’t know where we go from here…I’m just tired of the mediocre results

The lemmings who are content with 7-8 wins will tell you to quit being negative while simultaneously pretending that they aren’t content with mediocrity but “they are just being rational”. Meanwhile, even Vandy looks competent with a freshman quarterback versus an actual opponent not Furman

Texas’s front 7 isn’t the steel curtain, Alabama, LSU, Auburn, and Mississippi State all have competent DC’s just as good as Will Muschamp. He isn’t a coaching legend. He has been fired several times. It’s the running excuse to distract from poor offensive line play

I don’t like the excuse that the QB is young. Who’s fault is it when our QB room is in this situation? It sure isn’t the young QB. This is all on the coach for not having an experienced QB ready to play either from the portal or recruiting.

I think there is a larger discussion to be had in spending big for 5 star QBs. Is it worth it? Even if Brandon develops into a top 10 nfl pick, he is essentially a free agent at the end of every season and we have to renegotiate. So, what is advantage of wasting millions on a position that doesnt help us this season?
Correct, and that philosophy is likely the incorrect one in the current NIL landscape. The days of holding onto talent for 3-4 years are likely over and teams are competing and winning now with Portal additions. He has whiffed on several expensive high school recruits who have not developed and soaked up large amounts of money. Eventually boosters will get tired of throwing away money on high school recruits that aren’t being developed

It isn’t Heupel’s fault for offering a massive amount to an unproven high school quarterback who clearly doesn’t have the skill set to be a game changer?

Well, what about Merklinger and GMac? I don't thinks he's very good at developing them out of high school, he does okay with seasoned QB's even though he chose Milton over Hooker.

wtf? Nico isn’t his fault? He is the one that fell in in love with and made him his priority. What CJH qb has worked out other than Hooker? Who was signed as the back up option, lol. Aguilar fell in his lap or we would have had a losing record last year.

His QB evaluations and/or development are barely above abysmal.

He has 3 national championships as a DC and played for a couple more as a DC. Those four have combined for 0 national championships of any kind while coaching. The offensive line played poorly but Texas and Muschamp had a lot to do with it. Texas has a consensus top 5 in the nation DL/front 7 and that's likely moved up now that Oklahoma and Ole Miss have shown theirs isn't what people thought it was. Ohio State has the 1st or 2nd best OL in the country according to most rankings. They had 24 more yards than we did on the ground. The offensive difference is that they have a veteran QB and Jerimiah Smith, likely the best offensive player in the country. He had almost half of OSU's total yards.

Can someone explain how Sumrall has a better QB in year 1 than Heupel has in year 6.
I don't know if you heard but there is this thing called the transfer portal. The QB followed his OC. UF always has had the talent it was just their coaching sucked. Faulkner is an elite OC. Go back and look at what he did with Haynes King.

If 2 head coaches for 2 different teams can’t get a highly touted QB to perform up to standards, the problem is the QB not the 2 coaches.

Aguilar fell in his lap? So Heupel gets no credit for Aguilar even though a lot of coaches get lucky with portal QBs.

A seasoned QB should be the model going forward. Faizon will be great at some point but will it be for us or the next school he transfers to?

So, we lost a game all of us had as a loss. As bad as we played, we still had a shot against the number 1 team, and what, you want him fired? What are you wanting exactly? Yeah, it’s disappointing to lose, but go look at the predictions threads, pretty much everyone had us losing 3-4 games this season, nobody predicted undefeated. You rather go back to these games being blowouts? Some of you are just wild in your thinking. That’s just how I feel.

While I agree, I think OP has a valid point in bringing up why were we predicting 3-4 losses in the first place. Why isn't our program in a better spot in 2026 after 5-6 years where we aren't competing more like Texas. Last year was a "down" year for Georgia with a young team and they won the entire SEC. I agree that with the players we had, this wasn't a bad loss but why are we having to play a freshman QB or having a poor offensive line in the first place.

I do think Heupel is making the right moves bringing in Knowles and other coaches. He needs to make these moves on offense to and he probably will if things improve.

The key is that the schedule in 2026 is very favorable. Everyone is talking about 2027 but we are getting Florida back (look at what a good coach is doing there and not making excuses), we have to go to Alabama, we have to play at Georgia, and we will likely have to play at Oklahoma based on the rotations. This was the year were we should have had a playoff team and we don't.

I had us 8-4 in my predictions but it is sad that this is my prediction in the first place and I think that is the point that the OP is making.

EDIT: That being said, I still have faith in Heupel but I can understand the frustration. We have seen 7 SEC programs win the National Title since Tennessee's 1998 title. Even Auburn has won and multiple SEC titles and we are a better program than Auburn. The drought has been too long. Saban is gone now and we have an extended playoff which opens the door for us.

Nico and UCLA are looking pretty good this year, I hate to bust your bubble.
