Am getting ready to subscribe to satellite radio. Had been leaning toward XM, but was on the road this past weekend with a friend who had Sirius and we were able to get UT game. Would UT football/basketball only be available on Sirius? - (that will pretty much be the deciding factor for me, so any advice would be welcomed)

Yeah. XM is better for music-oriented radio, while Sirius has better talk and sports programming.

I've got XM and the talk and sports programming is fine as long as you don't need to hear Howard Stern. From what I've seen, XM and Sirius have a lot of the same stuff.

XM currently has contracts with the Big 10, Pac 10, ACC and Major League Baseball among others. Right now, Sirius has individual deals with the schools in the SEC. I've seen reports that the Sirius deals with SEC schools run out soon and XM is talking to them, but no confirmation.

I went with Sirius because they have SEC (listened to the Air Force game  ) and several BBall games last year.

They also have the NFL.

If you like baseball, XM is the one to go with.

Otherwise, they offer pretty much the same thing. I've heard XM has better music but Sirius has plenty.

Sirius is better. they have SEC, NHL, NBA, NFL, and they are getting NASCAR is January. music and talk is better to. i've had both and i've been WAY happier with Sirius.

only reason to get XM is if you want MLB.

Wow. I have often wondered what could be more boring than watching NASCAR on TV. I believe the answer would be listening to it.

The NASCAR station on XM has some decent stuff on it from time to time, but I've never seen the allure to listening to a race on the radio. That channel they had last year that was a rolling scanner picking up in car audio was just horrible.

Thanks, all! I'm gonna go with Sirius and hope UT doesn't switch to XM!

From what I've hear/read, you should be OK for at least a year or two. If they do switch to XM, as cheap as satellite radio systems are getting, it shouldn't be that big a deal to switch over.

actually, i listen to the race on the radio sometimes if i'm driving around doing errands on Sunday afternoon.

plus, Darrell Waltrip and Larry Mac are almost intolerable. and the guys on NBC are only slightly better. i get the sation in Knoxville and listen to the MRN broadcast a lot. and i listen to the radio broadcast on the scanner at the race. basically, i like it because of the fact i think the TV guys are idiots, and i hate boogity-boogity-boggity.

After getting responses on here, I sent an email to UT asking about remaining term on Sirius contract and got this answer:

"... the Vol Network is about to sign a 3-year deal with Sirius. However, the SEC is also considering getting involved in a conference deal with either Sirius or XM. Their contract could supersede our deal with Sirius if the conference wanted it to. More than likely UT and the other schools with a few years remaining on a deal with a satellite provider would be allowed to finish their contract.
So we anticipate staying with Sirius but things could change within the next 1-3 years depending on what the conference decides to do."

That's pretty much what I hear as well. Things are just sort of up in the air as far as the SEC's satellite deal. Like I said earlier though, I wouldn't worry about it too much if I were you. If they do switch to XM, it won't really cost that much to switch over.
