Fair enough. I can respect you for your honest opinion while also hoping along with you that you're wrong about it. I like what we have both in talent and coaches, so that's not what my concern is. If I have to admit a concern for this one it's this: Holgorsen's unique stamp on the modified air raid attack offense is one you need to study, because they strategically designed specific plays that are calculated to put linebackers and safeties in *conflicting* situations, where they have to make a choice between this player or that, this area or that, and then exploit the weakness created by whichever one our defender doesn't pick. To spread the field, they send their receivers on a combination of (4) vertical routes, 3 and 1s, 2 by 2 quicks and poles that turn into other routes after 16 or 22 yards depending on the coverage. Then they have plays where they have Grier take x number of steps, face and look one way, then plant his feet and turn to throw the total opposite direction on a screen that can catch even good defenses slipping if not prepared. What would be amazing is if the Vols could be prepared for each play that WVU is known to use and take it away from them before it even has a chance to develop. That's a tall order, but if any defensive minds are up to the challenge, it's a staff that looks like these guys all working together on it in unison:

Jeremy Pruitt, Kevin Sherrer, Chris Rumph, Charles Kelly, Terry Fair, and Tracy Rocker.

Hopefully, they have some assistants who organize the WVU plays that were the most productive and successful last season for them according to how many yards each got and how often each one was called.

If so, our players will be drilled on stopping them specifically and what to do each time on specific kinds of plays to avoid getting into one of those designed "conflicts" waiting for them.

I'd love to see us frustrate both Grier and Holgorsen where no matter which plays or wrinkle of them they try, the Vols defense is there ready for them.

I think they will and that's why I feel like we have a lot more to be excited about and will know for sure once we see it in Charlotte!
I hope you’re right right and my skepticism is ill-placed!

I’m very much in wait and see mode with most of our defensive talent. We’ve got plenty of potential, but have seen very little production from most of them. I’m born sure one offseason of good coaching will be enough for them to show out week 1 against an offense like WVU’s.

If they stay healthy, I do think we’ll see them improve throughout the season though.

Agreed, WV is over-hyped, however this game could be fools gold for the Volunteers. We'll most likely win this game and the legions will assume CJP has everything fixed.
