why the punt to the goal line was ruled a touchback rather than a ut touchdown after usc player kicked it.

We touched it first. The SC player had no chance to "recover" it after our initial touching because the ball is effectively more or less dead at that point. However, it should've been downed at the 1 IMO

Nobody ever does it, but once the punting team touches a punt, the receiving team basically gets a free shot at picking it up if they want. Even if they muff it, the ball goes back to the spot where the kicking team touched it.

that's what I thought but the refs left the ball live

The touching and downing were different in the refs' eyes. The initial touch was made without establishing himself within the field of play I guess (i.e. His feet were in the air). The touching counted, but because he didn't stop the ball while on the field, it wasn't downed. That's the only thing I can figure

This is how I've noticed this type of occurrence called in the past.

hope they send it to the SEC office --it was a bad call and that crew including the review ref should be suspended

McDowell made a stupid play by wildly sliding after we already laid it down at the 1. It caused the ball to go into the endzone. I was a little perplexed at the ruling though because the South Carolina player kicked it from my perspective causing it to go in but the refs didn't see it that way.

Right, he didn't cause the ball to go into the end
zone, the USCjr player kicked it into the end zone.

ALL BS. UT got screwed on that call, PERIOD! Ball is dead once kicking team player touches it. To top it off a SCe player kicked it into the end zone.

The ball was downed at the 1 ft line. Replay was ask to overturn the call of touchback (different question and wrong question). Should have been asked to determine if ball was down before endzone. Basically, a botched call.

I think you are wrong. I have seen this before. If a kicking team player runs up and touches the ball (note touches) and then runs away, the ball is live until the whistle blows. At the time of the touch, the offense player has the right to pick it up and run. For the play to end, the kicking team must Down The Ball, by kneeing it down. The ref has no right to blow it dead as soon as it is touched. He can, when after no offense player picks it up, but they usually wait for a time.
