I agree -- 2001 LSU.

It cost us a shot at a MNC.

But I bet Fulmer would be like Jo Pa then -- couldn't blast him out of the job.

Lose to LSU in SEC title game....we are ranked #2...this loss cost us a shot at the national championship against Miami and over 12 million dollars

Lose to Florida who scores 62 points in a total embarrassment

November 19th, 2005
We lose to Vanderbilt 28-24 AT HOME.....first time in 23 years

For significance.... the 1999 loss to Arkansas also cost the Vols a shot in the SEC Championship game and BCS Title game. The Vols were #2 in the BCS. Alabama went on to win the SEC that season. The Vols beat Bama that year 21-7... and it wasn't even as close as the score. And of course the Vols loss to Arkansas was because they blew a late 4th quarter lead... only to march down the field and be throwing into the endzone at the end of the game.

Of course the LSU loss in the SECCG in 2001 cost the Vols a shot at the NC.

And, to get more in depth on how the Memphis loss really hurt in 1996. 3 of the 5 teams ranked higher than the Vols in 1996 lost after that weekend (Florida, Nebraska, and Ohio State.) Had the Vols won, they and not Florida would have played Florida State in the Sugar Bowl. Arizona State lost in the Rose Bowl.
