Wondered why Coach Pruitt

You didn’t specify Oats. You do realize we didn’t run out of time on our final drive? When SC converted that last first down, we weren’t going to be able to get the ball back unless they turned it over. Refreshing to have 3 timeouts towards the end of the game tho. Of the two coaches, Muschamp had wasted two of his by the 4th quarter.

IKR!!

It's always smart to carry as many Time Outs as possible into the locker room at half time and onto the bus after the game. Muschump is a doofus for using his TO's when he thought he needed them. Having a ton of them saved up at the end of the year is looked on favorably by the bowl committees.

Or maybe not...

I dont think Pruitt knew what he was walking into until he first saw his team. He ptobably thought to himself, what have I gotten myself into?

Did he not watch film on this team the last two years? If not I have to wonder about how good of a DC he really was. If so I would have to assume he knew what he was getting into. And if he didn't know... well that doesn't speak very highly of his ability to judge a team.

when you save the timeouts and don't use them, you get to cash them in at the end of the game and get a free coke.

That's absurd. You know what's better than getting the ball at halftime? Getting the ball at halftime after you put up 3 points against a reeling defense.

Muschamp called TO because he was coaching to win the game.

Pruitt kneeled the ball because he is still thinking like a defensive coordinator at Bama and thought 5 points was 4 more than he needed to win.
Couldn't have said it better.

we didn't run out of time because they stopped us... we didn't have plays called on third or fourth down that would have gotten the required yardage An offensive minded coach would have called time-out and gotten the best available play
And if it didn’t work, it wouldn’t be so. It’s all a results oriented crap-shoot. If Tua doesn’t complete that last TD heave against UGA, then the consternation second guessing outcry level would have been tied between the call itself and Saban waiting until the second half to unleash Tua. Last second loss (like the one against Auburn in 2013) makes Saban’s genius seem less so. I really haven’t identified a game where Pruitt didn’t seem ready. We’ve had “offensive minded” HC’s who played it safe more often than not...doesn’t seem to be Pruitt’s MO presently. He goes for the touchdown on 4th against West Virginia and is always a threat to kick onside. The fourth down play might have been the perfect call and SC might have had the perfect D called against it. Difference between an offensive masterpiece and dumb luck is the scoreboard...been known to happen.

Fuzzy on the rewards program. Muschamp used two pretty early. His team doesn’t bail him out we’d have bitter roosters wondering why he wasted one after they had converted a third down and didn’t have the next play dialed up.

And he’s gambled on fourth downs and issued more than his share of onside kicks...doesn’t fit your narrative. Muschamp was DOWN and the Vols were getting the ball first in the second half. He wasn’t coaching to WIN at that point. He was trying to stave off disaster...hence the desperation that didn’t work THERE. 😉

He knew he wasn’t getting a juggernaut. Bet he googled our record last year.

Damn good DC. Should read up on it.

Clock mismanagement was the final 2 minutes of our game two days ago. JG was sacked with 2:25 remaining. Made it 4th down. Did we call a timeout to stop the clock and set up the play? No. We got a false start penalty on the 4th down attempt because we were hurrying. And on the next attempt JG was sacked again. All total over a minute of time ran off the clock to get off one play.

Call timeout and set up the offense on a critical 4th down conversation attempt. If we convert, great! 1st down, 2+ minutes remaining, and we still have 2 timeouts to score. If we don't score, then UGA has to run 2 minutes off the clock and we have 2 timeouts.

I bet that extra minute would have been nice to have instead of UGA getting the ball with 1 minute left and our timeouts didn't really matter at that point anymore. UGA ball with 2:20 and we have 2 timeouts is much better than UGA ball with 1 minute if we don't convert.
Y’all do realize calling time out the Defense also has time to substitute and get the right play called too?

Three timeouts gets you the ball back if your D holds. If the Vols kick a field goal and tie that’s GOING FOR THE WIN.

There is no question that he is still learning on the job. He is not accustomed to calling timeouts, so it appears he just doesn’t think about it. He’s gonna have to learn. Also could be a byproduct of preoccupation as DC. Whatever the reason, it appears he’s been slow to develop a feel for the game and an idea of clock management. Would be a good idea to bring in a seasoned former HC to serve as an “analyst” dedicated to helping him learn the parts of being an HC that he hasn’t yet experienced.

There is no doubt Pruitt has a lot to learn about game management, but he's got a lot to learn about play calling as well.
We have to be patient, because we have few other choices, we are a few years away I'm afraid
