UT Names Brian Pensky As Soccer Coach
2010 National Coach of the Year Joins UT After Seven Seasons at Maryland

UT Names Brian Pensky As Soccer Coach University of Tennessee Athletics

Jan. 26, 2012

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - University of Tennessee vice chancellor and director of athletics Dave Hart announced Thursday that Brian Pensky, the 2010 Soccer America National Coach of the Year, has accepted the position of head soccer coach at the University of Tennessee. Pensky takes the helm at Tennessee after seven years as the head coach of the women's soccer program at the University of Maryland.

"I am excited to have Brian coming to Tennessee to lead our soccer program," said Hart. "Brian is an outstanding coach with a proven record of success in building and maintaining an elite program capable of competing at a championship level. We welcome Brian, Abby and their children into our Volunteer family."

In 2010, Maryland earned the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament, and Pensky was named both National Coach of the Year by Soccer America and ACC Coach of the Year. He served as the head coach of the Maryland women's soccer team from 2005-11 and posted a 67-52-20 overall record. While at the helm in College Park, Pensky led the Terrapins to their most successful three-year run in program history, with a 44-14-9 record and a .724 win percentage over the last three years.

Pensky guided Maryland to NCAA Tournament appearances in each of the last three consecutive seasons, including Sweet 16 appearances in both 2009 and 2011.

Now that's the way you do it. First it was Serrano. Now Pensky. Hope AD Hart remembers this method for other sports if needed in the future.

Great hire. Not that I care too much about women's soccer, but I like seeing all UT sports do well

I am not a soccer fan, but I always want any VOL team to win championships. I am impressed that they were able to get him. Does he have ties to the area, or were they just willing to pay more? GBO!

I don't think the baseball coach was hired by Hart but was done by Joan Cronin. Am I wrong

Hamilton unofficially, Cronin made it official. Although I do not think Hamilton had to work hard for that one, I think Dave S. wanted this job.

"After an overwhelming 24 hours of events, I have made the decision to leave a great program at Cal State Fullerton to take on the challenge of returning the University of Tennessee to a spot among the nation's elite," Serranos said in a university statement. "While this decision was not an easy one, it makes it a little easier to say yes when you have an entire family completely in support for you.

Former UT player Chris Burke and Los Angeles Dodgers pitching coach Rick Honeycutt were also among the several candidates considered for the position, a source close to the interview process told the News Sentinel. Serrano, though, was a top target from the start, and UT was able to wrap up its search, which was briefly interrupted by athletic director Mike Hamilton's resignation last Tuesday, when he accepted the offer.

"Dave is a proven winner and is a perfect fit as the head baseball coach at the University of Tennessee," interim vice chancellor for athletics Joan Cronan said in a university statement. "He has taken two programs to the College World Series as a head coach, and we are confident that he is the right coach to lead our program to national prominence."

Tennessee AD Mike Hamilton Announces Resignation

Hamilton has helped interview candidates for baseball coach but said it will be up to a committee of Vols officials to make the final decision now, which probably won't come until the conclusion of the College World Series at the end of June.

Hamilton also asked for fans to rally together to support football coach Derek Dooley, basketball coach Cuonzo Martin and the future athletics director. Dooley thanked him for his support.

"I will always be grateful for the opportunity Mike gave me to be the head football coach at Tennessee," Dooley said. "The tremendous support he provided our staff and program has allowed us to set a strong foundation for the future of Tennessee football."

Serano was Cronin's decision. Leave Hamilton out of it.

Post after yours clearly says he was target from the start. I do not know why you are so angry about that. Is it because you feel we are not giving women respect, because that is not it. I said Hamilton started it, and Cronin finished it. I also said Hamilton did not have to work hard for that one, because Dave S. wanted the job and made that known.

Hart said he had a list of 6 elite coaches on his short list for the job. Looks like he was able to lure one in. Keep up the good work Mr. AD.

Memphis coach was among the six and had an offer on the table. Declined, but he has also declined jobs at Oklahoma, TCU, Arky this year and KY and Ole Miss 2 years previous.

Either way, sounds like UT landed a good one. Hope he takes advantage of the instate talent.

Sorry I wasn't being hostile. I thought Cronin took over & she did carry the process out it looks like. Who talked to the asst coach @ SC? That would have been mu top choice but Serano will be fine. Just ready to be done w/ all things Hamilton. I respect Cronin & what she has done. The women's programs have had some success.
