Remember Tennessee head coach Lane Kiffin's assertion that every Vols starting spot was open heading into this season except for Eric Berry's at safety?

Well, the Heisman Trophy candidate finally has some company.

Kiffin released his depth chart for the 2009 season opener against Western Kentucky after the Vols staged a Friday afternoon walk-through on Haslam Field.

Tennessee's two-deep lists 12 seniors, 12 juniors, two sophomores and an impressive seven freshmen either alone in a starting position or bracketed with a teammate on offense, defense or special teams.

True freshmen in the running to start their collegiate debuts are wide receiver Nu'Keese Richardson, tailback Bryce Brown, defensive tackle Montori hughes, cornerback Mike Edwards and safety Janzen Jackson, while David Oku gets the nod at one of the two kick returner slots. Redshirt freshman Aaron Douglas also is bracketed at the right tackle position. :good!:

Happy now big guy? I didn't see any forum discussing this already and the reason I posted it. You don't mind do you?:cray: Since you knew about this days ago, why didn't you post it, then I could just read it?

It is interesting that Bryce Brown is bracketed with Montario - I had a feeling that Montario would be alone in that spot, at least early in the season.

Mike Edwards is bracketed with Anthony Anderson, which surprises me a bit, it seemed like Anderson might win that battle.

I had thought there was a chance that Teague would get the 2nd WR spot over Nuke, but that didn't happen.

Poole is 4th on the depth chart at running back - looks like his scrimmage performances didn't move him up. I am actually shocked he isn't 3rd, ahead of Oku. I didn't think he would stiff the 1 or 2, but surprised he is number 4.

Do you think the indecision at right tackle between Douglas and Shaw has more to do with neither really stepping up enough, or a very good battle - I unfortunately am thinking that it is the former.

Good to see Art Evans securing his side of the corner battle. Looks like Vinson will play, but isn't sniffing either starting spot.

What's up with Dan Williams? Is it just that Montori is pushing him that hard - or is he not coming along. In this case, I'm thinking that it is just that Montori is pushing that hard. Dan will likely get the first snap against WKU, IMO. The more important question is about Wes Brown. He is the other starter - but how long can he realistically play week-in-week-out? Will the plan be to move Hughes over if Brown can't play?

It looks like Kiffin is going to go with Nuke as the PR and Oku as a KR (along with Rogan). I hope that the FRs' hands are more secure than they were in the scrimmage. I am excited about Nike at PR, but you've got to secure the ball.
