You just described the results of an elite CB coach and then proceeded to say Willie isn't elite. I think you just don't know what elite looks like.Hood looked pretty good. True freshman Redmon didn’t look bad either. McMurray also looked good. Gibson and McCoy were two of the two best young corners in the country. He’s not elite but he’s pretty damn good imo.
More history to it than that. I’ve always argued for CWM but he isn’t a top five secondary coach. He’s damn good though. Was damn good at Georgia as well. We probably just have a different definition of elite. You just described the results of an elite CB coach and then proceeded to say Willie isn't elite. Starting CB and AA McCoy didnt play
Starting CB Gibson missed 2.5 quarters
McMurray replaced Boo at Nickel played great
New starter Farooq played well at Safety
Freshmen played HEAVY minutes at CB
The DBs did well considering how new the players are to playing for UT. IMO..
Not Martinez but definitely related:
We played backups heavily at LB
Including freshmen AND walkons 2 at a time in the 2nd half.
I was very impressed by how many backups and freshmen played on defense in this game at ALL 3 levels. In addition to DBs and LBs, we had 4 different DTackles go down and starter Hobbs didnt play ever.
That team also had 3 or 4 mid air fumbles because Teams were running the option back then they were beating the RB out. QB pitch out = interception to the house. Not sure about that. The 1970 and 1971 teams were the best I have ever seen. More than 30 interceptions in a season is just not common. Bobby Majors, David Allen, Tim Preist, and I think Conrad Graham. And having Ray Nettles and Jackie Walker at LB’s helped.
I think we he DB coach may have been Robby Franklin.
