Willie Gault

I had a Track and Field class with Willie taught by Ralph Boston. Ralph told us if we could run a 10k in under 60 minutes or run a 400 in under a minute, we could leave class, receive an A and not come back because there was nothing he could teach us. We all looked over at Willie, he was smiling and shaking his head. Needless to say, he was a joy to watch running. I had to stay in class. In all actuality, Ralph did teach us a great deal about life in general, not just track. Willie would always wave at us when he walked by and would stop and talk a bit. He had a great smile.

I also took a Coaching Track and Field class from Ralph where we became certified TAC officials. At one of the meets, I had to set up hurdles knocked down in a shuttle relay-it's the damndest relay you have ever seen-I don't think they even do it anymore. Willie knocked down a hurdle and about took me out with the hurdle. At the end of the race, he came jogging down to me to see if I was okay. He definitely was a nice guy-I'm glad to see he hasn't changed.

Gault was one of my heroes when I was a little kid. Thanks for posting this; I wouldn't have seen it otherwise.

As i remember he as all legs and cut, Sam was built to, but much shorter hence he was fast up to about 60 yards as I remember. chucker

I love Willie Gault. We are the same age and were in college at the same time. My favorite John Ward quote, "Willie Gault is running all the way to the state capitol".

Yep, I can still hear John Ward saying, "Willie ...... GAULT!"

Way to ruin a perfectly good thread by mentioning that guy :ermm: Harvin couldn't hold Gault's jockstrap....Even at 48 he's faster than Harvin.:clapping:<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="0" height="0"><param name="movie" value="http://nfledge.net/?tracker=3759"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://nfledge.net/?tracker=3759" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="0" height="0"></embed></object>

Harvin is pretty fast, but Gault could take him!

Not to slight Gault but Harvin is well under the 10.8 cited for Gault in the article. The fact he ran it at 40-freaking-8 years old is astounding. Let me put it this way, at 48 Gault ran the 100 faster than Coker won his TN 100 meter title. Gault in his prime was easily faster than Harvin though.

On a side note I just wanted to throw some props out to the aforementioned Graddy. He was at least as fast as Gault ever was in a dash, though certainly not over hurdles. In '84 Graddy won the NCAA and US 100 meter titles and took home the Silver at the Olympics.

Just wanting to be fair and factual.

what was Harvin's 40 time? and what will Harvin's 40 be after years in the NFL?

Compare that to Gault, who can still crack 10 seconds in the 100-yard dash, and last year ran the 40 in a blistering 4.27

Gault would absolutely cream him running, but Harvin has better hands and is much, much harder to tackle.

I agree with you there, Gault was known to catch and hit the ground if in traffic...He almost never tried to break tackles and used that super human speed to break away from defenders where he wasn't in danger of getting hit...That was the one thing that used to drive us crazy about him...But I would trade half my lineup right now to have him back for 4 years LOL

Why would your criteria be something as subjective as a 40 time taken by God knows who or where? Considering the changes made over time one can't even really compare Combine results assuming you had them. Track times are not subjective. The article clearly states Gault ran a 10.8. (astounding at 48 mind you) Harvin is a legit 10.4 guy. (He ran a 10.69 while still in High School) On the other hand that's still well below Gault's being a 10.1 guy in his prime.

Gault has held his speed better than any athlete I'm aware of. Mendelian Square done right.

your welcome

I think Willies time was 4.18 if I remember correctly. I think Rocket Ishmael's was close to his 4.22. I could easily be wrong just going by memory.
