Didn't finish outside the top 10 any of those yrs. Of course 2 sec championships and a natl title. 8 total losses in 5 yrs (including bowl games), and 4 of those were to the gators. Man, those were some great yrs!!!!

I agree with you about everything going in cycles. UT will get it going again.

No doubt! I was a teenager during those years. It has been a sad reality to me the last 5 years. I would have never thought the program could get this low 10 years ago. I will most definitely appreciate it more if we do get back to the top!

Not if we keep changing coaches we won't

you are correct that stability does lead to success but you should also see some steps towards success and so far all we've seen is a consistant level of mediocre. Moral victories and winning the first half doesnt equate to success. Not making a change and hoping it gets better only dips us farther into the well we have to climb out.

unfortunately, it'll be more than 3 or 4 years. 10-15 is my guess.

It could be that long, yes... I know it pretty much took Coach Majors 10 - 12 years to rebuild. I remember that era very well, and it seems that we are repeating history right now.

Majors would win the big one and the following week would lose the little one.

Yes sir, that is correct. I remember we had Bama down 17-0 in 1979 and lost 27-17 but a few weeks later we crushed Notre Dame, 40-18. That was in Coach Majors' 3rd year, and think we lost to Rutgers that year for homecoming, not sure about that one. Coach Dooley has yet to win a huge game like the ND game in 79. I think ND was ranked #2 in the country at the time.

and that's what a vast number of Vol fans dont know about. Sure, JM started the fun but it wasnt all 1985 Sugar Bowl every year. There were many, many 5-6-7 win years with big wins followed by head scratching losses. But that was a different era and not the era of instant gratification and message boards to vent frustration. No way JM would have lasted in today cfb landscape.

After the ridiculous crap that happened to our program, it will take 5-10 years to get back to where we were. It will NEVER happen if we continue to expect it in 2 years. The best thing we can do is support our program. I don't think people understand the impact all their negativity has. There is a lot of power in suffering, sticking with it, and eventually prevailing.

No. 95-98 was it's own era. Only 1 Peyton. Only 1 Al Wilson. Will we be great again? I sure as hell hope so

I don't think so. People need to understand the drastic change in the SEC landscape that has occurred from then to what it is now. When we were dominate, there was only ONE other legitimate great team in the SEC that we had to compete with..Florida. Alabama was way down, LSU was way down, Auburn was decent but no where near elite, South Carolina was a doormat along with Vandy. Arkansas, Georgia and Miss st were decent but not close to Tenn and Fla. NOW the SEC has LSU, Bama, Fla, Goergia, SC, and Ark(with the exception on this year) that are all good to elite programs. Shoot even Vandy is no longer a pushover and is now competitive. Texas A&M is creepin up there too. Basically what I'm saying is that the SEC is extremely competitive pretty much across the board. We once had to deal with 1 team, now we deal with 5 BCS top ten teams. Things are WAY different!

Phil Fulmer and the Vols went 45-5 from 1995-'98. Where does that stack up with the best 4 yr. runs from other coaches past and present.

Chris Peterson - 50-3

Nick Saban - 48-6 (will be better after this season most likely.)

Steve Spurrier - (UF) 45-6-1

Joe Paterno - 43-5

Bobby Bowden - 45-5

Urban Meyer (UF) - 48-7

Tom Osborne - 49-2

Mack Brown - 45 -7

Barry Switzer - 41-3-2

Bill Snyder - 44-7

Jimmy Johnson - Miami - 44-4

Lou Holtz - ND- 43-7

Bo Schembechler - 41-3-1

Jim Tressle - 44-8

Mark Richt - 44-9

R.C. Slocum 42-5-1

Chip Kelly is currently in his 4th year and is 42-6

GBO!
