to fire a head coach who led his respective alma mater to a national championship?

Granted, there haven't been many coaches that have led their alma mater to a national championship (e.g., Steve Spurrier). But I'm not aware of another coach who led his respective alma mater to a national championship and then later got fired by that school. That's not exactly something that any school would want to face.

Fulmer can prevent UT from having to fire him by resigning quickly. If he hasn't tendered his resignation within 48 hours of the end of the regular season, then he should be swiftly fired (along with the entire coaching staff). We need to clean house quickly in order to hire a quality coach (what a nice change that will be) early enough to allow him to finish the recruiting season strongly.

yah, fulmer needs to go with grace, and not leave in an ugly battle. gone with grace=better recruiting, smoother transition,, ugly battle=not as good recruiting and worse transition. we need it smooth because we are bringing a new starting QB next season, and its imperative that its a smooth one for either coleman or crompton, or whoever can learn the system and be ready to go

i have been a fulmer supporter for a while through all of this but man this is nuts. A pee wee coach could have made the adjustments needed on sat. FREAKIN UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!!!!

Coker was a DB for Northeastern St (Oklahoma) in the 60s.

There haven't been many coaches that have been successful at their alma maters, let alone win a national championship (that I'm aware of).

Ironically, about the closest thing I can think of would be when we forced Johnny Majors out. He didn't have a national title at Tennessee, but he did have back to back SEC titles.

This is what I was hoping to hear. Granted, many Tennessee fans are upset about the way the football program is going, but the fact shouldn't be overlooked that Fulmer has done a lot for the school. He pretty much has lived his whole life at Tennessee. (Granted, he's been rewarded with a very comfortable salary package in the process.) But still, even if fans want a coaching transition, hopefully it will be done with respect for all Fulmer has done for the school and fans won't disrespect him in the process.

I still don't understand why anyone wants to see the man "fired". After everything he has done for this school and this state. After the glory he has brought us as fans, I simply don't understand it.

I understand being angry and I understand that you may not want him as coach, but why isn't everyone calling for him to quit, or retire? Why the venom toward someone none of you know? Would you want people that don't know how to do your job coming into your workplace with paper bags on their heads screaming for you to be fired because you didn't get a report done the way that they think you should have?

This world is going to hell in a handbasket. No one respects anyone anymore.

I agree with many of the posters here and expect it to be a retirement/resignation. Given the bad feelings and PR from the Majors deal, I'd think Hamilton will do everything he can to persuade Phil to resign.

If he does retire, and Cut or Chavis are given the reigns then you would understand it.

As you said he has been rewarded for his past success and it would be wrong for the AD/BOT to treat Phil any differently than they would a coach with his record who is not a UTK alumni. Personally, once Phillip is gone, I hope that UTK never ever hires another UTK alumni as hfc (and that applies Manning as well). It is too painful, and the raw emotions involved prevent people fom making rational businesslike decisions.

Phil has his legacy in his hands now. If he bows out gracefully he will be well received by 99%+ of the fans. If he holds the fanbase hostage by leveraging his buyout and personal favors owed against overwhelming fan sentiment, and then he does not produce and SEC championship in the next season or two, he will probably be thought of in the same vein as Johnny Majors with half or more of the fans badmouthing him for the rest of his life without any regard for what he did in '98.

That's a piss poor reason to be disrespectful.

Also, I honestly think that Hamilton will hire a new head coach if Fulmer leaves. I don't think he will hand over the program to Cut or Chavis.

Fulmer has done alot but the only thing that would save him this year in my opinon is to win all the remaining games this year. Including the bowl game of course.

I hope he doesnt give it to one of those guys....I hope we win out (including a bowl game) and Phil retires on a positive note. I also hope Cut and Chavis find work elsewhere, this program needs someone that is young and innovated to bring UT back to prominence (sp) I thank Phil for everything that he has done....But, College FB has passed him by...

I just can't take it anymore. I have supported this team and staff despite the previous lackluster performances but this tops em all. I am tired of seeing PF on the sidelines. I don't care any longer about what he has done for the school in the past. What he is doing now is running the program into the ground. I can't believe all of the fire Fulmer stuff after the Florida loss but now after an even more embarassing loss everyone seems to have the opinion all is well and drastic measures should not occur. WRONG. FIRE EVERYONE! UT will lose to SC, UK, and ARK and Fulmer and Co. will be gone. The team has quit on the coaches bottom line.
