I've noticed that Butch and recruits always flash this hand signal in pictures.
I think Butch or UT marketing came up with idea.
Also think someone on this site uses it as an avatar.
It's where you touch your second finger to ur thumb to form an O and the remaining fingers form a V and an L.

Anyway, will this catch on?

I wouldn't call it 'new.'

Yeah, I think the current marketing department and coaching staff are top-notch. Love the sign. Very catchy.

I've been slinging it up when I see a Vol tag here in Georgia! My wife says somebody is gonna barely see it, and think I'm flipping the bird.

Also love Brick-by-Brick and Rise to the Top.

And it is cool to see commits and recruits donning bucket hats.

I have seen the Nike (?) gloves, and it looks like they just go together to spell Vols, just like most other teams have for theirs. I know they like to put their stamp on everything, but I hope they keep the Shocker signal and make appropriate gloves.

I thought the new gloves have the power T. Old ones had Vols. Kinda liked the old ones better.

you might be correct, that's why I had a big question mark. I'm not much of an apparel junkie, so wasn't sure what gloves I was seeing in the picture. Either way, I do like the shocker signal. It's just unique for us.

Definitely not new, and is definitely a modified shocker.

There was an article in the beacon when I was student back in 2002 about how this guy wanted to give back to the University, but didn't have the means to donate money. He saw how other teams had hand signals (Texas, most notably), and came up with the VOLshocker thing.

There also used to be a Sports Illustrated OnCampus edition that would come with the Beacon once a week, and they did a piece on the gameday atmosphere at Tennessee, and they took a picture of a bunch of students and cheerleaders at the Rock. This was just after the introduction of the VOLshocker, and several of the people in the photo were holding up the hand sign.

A few weeks later, SI published an apology article stating that they didn't realize what the hand signal was or know its meaning. They most clearly only saw shocker and didn't understand the difference between the VOLshocker and the regular shocker.

I'll do some googling to see if I can find either the Beacon article or the SIOC articles.

EDIT: Here is the DB article from 27 August 2002.

I hate texas but their hand sign works because it's simply and looks like horns. Ours is awkward and doesn't really work--doesn't look like "vols"--but whatever gets people stoked, especially recruits.

I wouldn't say it's unique to us. Arizona St. does something very similar.

Doesn't look like vols because there isn't an s. Definitely looks like VOL.

I'm leery of these hand signs. First, linemen and basketball players have crooked fingers by college and can't sign clearly.

Second, casual viewers who don't know what it means may think we've got thugs signing to their homeys watching on TV. Besides, I don't wanna stir up no more trouble with that Van Buren gang!
