This has been brought up in small snippets in other threads, but I'd like to see a more robust discussion take place.

The SEC is preparing to unveil their new information control policies for media and fans. In shorthand, the policy states that:
  • you will not be allowed to take pictures at the game;
  • you will not be allowed to SMS or MMS game updates;
  • you will not be allowed to provide game updates by Twitter, Facebook or other means;
  • you will not be allowed to call someone or receive a call and say "This game is awesome / really blows / is happening".

Tidesports.com has the document in pdf form at this link.

I think this is pretty scummy and a little too controlling. I can see not allowing video cameras and the like in the stadium, but you darned well better be ready for a beat down if you try to claw my Blackberry from my hands.

Thoughts?

I didn't read the link too closely, but I didn't see anything about fans. Looked like it pertained to media credentials.

There's no way that they can enforce that with all the smart phones out there. Seriously, how are they going to moniter all those facebook or twitter pages? As for taking pictures at the game, what's the point of it? I don't see any logical reason as to why you can't take pictures. All in all, they can try all they want to enforce this, but we all know it's just a waste of time.

Good luck keeping several hundred thousand fans from calling/texting updates to people, taking pics of the game on their phone, etc.

I guess it would make a little more sense if was just pertaining to media.....but not much.

has to. There's no way they think it's possible to prevent fans from taking pics. This is to keep people from making money off them without giving the SEC their cut.

There's a fan policy, but its mostly just there to protect the SEC in the future. Nobody is going to stop you from taking or posting pictures. The Twitter police aren't going to come after you, etc. This is not something that's going to be widely or strictly enforced by any stretch of the imagination.

What will be strictly enforced is a ban on selling those pictures that you take at the game. That's the whole point of the policy, actually.

Also, the SEC and its internet partner, XOS will be heavily patrolling YouTube and related sites and removing video from games.

Page four: Tickets and Non-Media Credentials.

Also, the copy of the policy leaked here is several months old and has undergone numerous changes since then. The new media policy has been released, the new fan policy has not.

The policy is a little draconian, but does it really rise to the level of something that would keep people from attending games?

Stadium security: "Who are you contacting on that phone?"

Me: "Giving my friend a weather update."

Excellent, then there's still time to let the SEC know how we as fans feel.

GAVol, your comment is why I posted. I'm taking a wait-and-see approach to see just how draconian the enforcement will be.

If the policy can be used to eject the mongoloids who spend the entire game calling their idiot friends and standing up and waving to show them where they are sitting, I support it 100%.

Amen :) I think those are the same people imploring the entire section to start the wave in the 4th quarter.

Ah so, didn't read far enough I suppose. My eyes seem prone to glazing over when encountering legalese in any way, shape or form, subject to certain conditions or limitations, as might be delineated or described herein, or implied herewith.
