I just read this write-up about coaches on the rise, and it says that his next logical step is head coach at Tennessee.
FOX Sports on MSN - COLLEGE FOOTBALL - 10 college football coaches on the rise - Number 1

Will Muschamp, defensive coordinator, Texas

Don't get used to the new Texas defensive coordinator; he's just a rental. One of the hottest young names in coaching, Muschamp moved from Auburn to Austin to improve a defense that's been full of talent but short on production, especially in the secondary. With a national title on his resume as LSU's defensive coordinator in 2003, if he can be the difference maker for a talented Longhorn team looking to break Oklahoma's two-season Big 12 title streak, he'll be off to be someone's head coach unless Texas can come up with a succession plan. The Next Logical Step: Tennessee head football coach

Very interesting. I wonder why they listed Tennessee? Does he have ties here, or they just think Fulmer is the next to go? Strange, but interesting.

I don't see it happening... unless we have a 6-6 year or maybe 7-5 with blowout losses to florida and alabama again... and I don't see that happening.

Muschamp is definitely getting the love though... and if he can make the country club soft longhorns into a nasty hard hitting D, it will be deserved.

His auburn defense shut down florida last year--which was a major accomplishment. I was impressed by Auburn's fundamentals---very solid, no mistakes. The one thing about Tennessee is that the Vols can be counted on to make half a dozen bonehead plays a game. There were fewer with Cut running the offense, but mistakes still R US.

I agree they were very disciplined. Not to mention he seemed to provide great motivation and leadership with his enthusiasm.

Wasnt this the same outfit that claimed Boise St the team of the past ten years.

A up and coming coach with SEC expierance. Someone must figure UT will be the first in the market looking for a HC.

CPF is my coach and our coach right now and for the forseeable future. Let's stop the speculatioin about the next dynasty. Remember we went outside the Big Orange family with the Bill Battle hire several years ago. How did that work?
Last year some were ready to hang CPF because he wouldn't get rid of some of the Assistants. Now he has almost a completely new staff and the talk is who will replace him. Lets get behind the players and the ENTIRE Coaching Staff and stomp the H*&% out of the rest of the SEC after we put away UCLA and UAB.

Please compare CP's bowl record with that of every past Big Orange Coach and then tell me he isn't building a legacy equalling or bettering any of the coaches in the past. Don't get to quick with criticism, I loved the heritage the General gave us too.

I am a big fan of Mushcamp's, but I don't see him being our head (or anyone else's) anytime soon

Isn't it more likely that he'd end up at Alabama after a messy $aban departure?

I would think that the Longhorns have some kind of succession package in for him.

I don't care about his bowl record. Look at his record against the top coaches in the SEC. Meyer, Richt, Spurrier, Tuberville, Saban, & Miles. No so much...
