Barring any injury to Ainge,if there comes a point this season whereby Ainge becomes stale/ineffective, would Fulmer bring Crompton in and start building for next year?

I would hope the coaches will put in the "hottest" player regardless of position. It's gettin' closer and closer now. Go Vols!

Absolutely, he gave Ainge a run for it last year and is more talented. But, I think Ainge would have to lose two games atleast after last year. Crompton is trying to change some habits right now and is not playing confidently, Cutcliffe is changing his swing. But, once the re=programming is complete we have a stud on our hands.

The only way I see Crompton getting a lot of PT is one or two ways: 1) Vols are below .500 or 2) EA is injuried. Other than that he will be in mop up mode this season.

I don't know why we are even talking about this. JC will be a good QB but right now he is 2nd and will be. I hope he gets some play time when we have big leads ONLY.

I'm not sure that Crompton gave Ainge that much of a run for it. Meachem saved Crompton's butt unlike I saw him have to do for Ainge. I think that the season has to take a serious nosedive before you see Crompton playing for Ainge - that is, excluding the 2nd half of the Cal game of course :).

Barring injury, the only way I see Ainge becoming stale or ineffective is through the performance of his Wide outs/ TE's.

We're talking about a QB that was one of the top 3 in the nation before he got hurt. There's about a .01% chance that Ainge (himself) will fold mentally.

That being said, we will likely see Crompton in the second half of all our cupcake games and blowouts.

Yeah, thats why we lost both games that Crompton started in last year.

Umm.....the competition was a little tough in those games. LSU and Arkansas on the road are two tough starts especially for the first of your career. If he had lost to Vandy and Kentucky then you would have an argument, but we lose to Arkansas last year regardless of who starts at QB.

I like JC but he was TOTALLY a deer in the headlights in the arky game. He got shoved down by one hand by Jamaal ANderson. The stunts Arky used had him confused bigtime.

While I agree on both points, I must say that the entire Arky game was the least prepared UT team that I have seen since the GA debacle in Neyland in 03.

I see what your saying, but i'm not sold on Crompton "giving Ainge a run for his money" last year. The offense was unarguably under Ainge's control in '06. Crompton only saw playing time when:

A.) We had a huge lead

or

B.) Ainge was hurt, as was the case in the LSU and Arkansas games.

same here........for JC to see the feild in any other situation, then you can be rest assured that "worst case scenarios" have come true for this season.

so at this point, it's not a matter of these two competing for the spot. if JC does start at any point, it's becuase he has to.

and that would just be bad all the way around, and that's not a knock on him folks.

Not after Ainge played so well was Crompton giving him a run in the fall parctice it was a flip of the coin and in the cal game if Ainge faltered Crompton was coming in right away. At this point, Ainge has really mastered game management abilities. That is what Crompton needs to understand to make the jump as an elite quarterback. He wants to make the big play and needs to slow the game down. We all want to see Ainge play well and Crompton just be in mop up this year. We have had enough of the next year hopes we want it this year. But, Crompton is an NFL talent and will come in if Ainge plays badly for a couple games something none of us want to happen.

A good Offensive Coordinator will find a way to get him some real game snaps. A single game play IMO is worth 20 practice snaps. We don't want all our eggs in 1 basket, play him when you can or we'll wish he had if we have no choice down the road.

To place the blame for those 2 losses last year on J.C. is totally unfair. UT was one uncalled J. Russell fumble away from stealing the LSU game. UT may have had a better chance against Arky with Ainge, but you just have to say, they outplayed us in all aspects of the game. Don't get me wrong, I am pulling for Ainge to have a HUGE Season and I think he has matured to the point he can if his supporting cast will help him out. Go VOLS!!!

He didn't give Ainge a run for it last year and where do you get he is more talented? The only reason Crompton will play this year is if Ainge gets hurt and mop-up duty in a blowout. Ainge is far and away a better QB than Crompton at this point. Crompton might not even start next year. He is going to have to learn NOT to take on linebackers when keeping the ball. Your "gave Ainge a run for it last year" comment is total BS. He was NEVER considered ahead of Ainge.

Um did you click on my earlier link, I could post 20 more just like it. Ainge played well and is now loved by all last year. Yes, like I said he is far ahead in the mental aspect of the game now. But, about this time last year this was not so it is what it is. I know you might be from the knoxville area and hoping for Coleman, my school used to play against McCallie but still Crompton is going to start next year. So blame someone else for LSU and Arkansa or just get over it. This time next year you will be saying how he is the next coming of the great quarterback at UT.

to be fair, the position was up for competition last spring, but i do think you are correct in that Crompton was never considered "ahead" of Ainge, but there was a position battle at one time....

either way though, right now, it's not a question....ainge plays until he just completely tanks or gets hurt. the former i don't see happening, the latter, well, you never know.......

I agree not ahead but one bad half from being the starter in the Cal game and Ainge made it happen and there is no looking back. He is our guy now. And, it is hard to see him playing bad this year I agree. I expect big things from him.

Crompton did not give Ainge a run for it last year. Crompton will play only if Ainge gets injured or if we lose 4 to 5 games.
