I did some light research on Boise St. talent and came up with the following:
Boise St. was ranked 14th last year in total defense, but what exactly does that mean? Not a whole lot until you consider what he had to work with. Over the last 4 recruiting classes, Boise St. has not had one single 4 star recruit on the team. Their recruits over the 4 years averaged 2.3 stars according to Rivals. Their recruiting class over the last 4 years average rank was 75th in ncaa. (For those of you that think that stars don't mean anything, just go back and look at the recruiting classes of the national championship teams over the last decade) This tells me two things about Wilcox: 1.) The man has an eye for talent. and 2.) He can develop the talent he has. Bottom line...Wilcox is a BIG time hire for UT!

I like him much better than Steele and most of the other names that we looked at (i.e., NFL position coaches that had never been a DC).

By the way, we got him for a lot less money than we were going to pay others, so that is nice too. If he does a great job, we will have to pay him more to keep him, and then that amount will have been earned by his performance.

Good post. I think he's a solid hire, but we shall see. Wish Berry could work his system....

I agree he looks awesome on paper...lets see how it translates on the field. If our guys buy into what he is doing then we have the hottest young coaches (wilcox and Dooley) in the nation.

Great post thanks for the research. I watched severasl Boise St. games last yr and was impressed with the way the defense played. I think give him a year to get SEC legs under him and a year to recruit what he feels he is going to need for the defense and things will turn around. After all Boise did hold down Oregon and TCU last season. Feel this is a sleeper of a hire. GBO

Great post. The more i find out about this guy the better i feel about the staff and team. I think our defense could become even more feared by others with him leading the way.

I talked to a friend that is a NFL scout and he and his co-workers speak very highly of Wilcox and think it was a great hire. This is same NFL staff that said UT would have trouble when Florida hired Meyer.

Dooley's our HC. Wilcox is our DC. Now that we had a good recruiting class we can't really criticize them til we see the results on the field.

Bill King (Rivals guy & WNSR/Nashville) said Wed. that Wilcox was a terrific hire for the Vols. He must be quite a motivator & innovator. Bring it!

Dooley has made it quite clear that who we get in here matters...but not nearly as much as what the coaches do with them once they are here

One concern I have is that Wilcox wasn't able to get great defensive talent....luckily he still has LT on his staff to help out with the recruiting!

I bet he can recruit just fine from what I have read. In fact, people at BS say he was their best recruiter.

Ummm...he was recruiting to Boise State.

Boise State has become one hell of a football team, but it's still not a destination that most top high school talent is aspiring to.

I'll say this much: someone at Boise State was coaching up those two-star guys into some terrific defensive talent.

Wilcox knows what it takes to beat Oregon and that is going to be very important.

I like the Wilcox hire a lot. Some like to say he is a WAC coach, yeah a WC coach who stopped TCU and Oregon. Something even USC couldn't do.

I think he will turn out well, especially if what Dooley said about chemistry works out
