Why was Jerry Green fired?

Guess I was the only one who enjoyed those years.

In John Wards last year calling basketball I remember him saying "paraphrasing" beating ky at Rup might not be a National Championship....but its close.

After enduring the Houston years I was glad he got to go out enjoying calling basketball again.

There were lots of wins during JG years, but his teams were very unlikable and just didn't play hard. I remember going to the "headband" game in the SECT against SC and just being nauseated watching them get out-hustled and outplayed by a far inferior Gamecock team. Jerry was pretty unlikable himself, which didn't help the situation.

I know thats alot of peoples opinion but I did like those teams. Of course you never knew which team you was going to get on any given night but alot more often than not they were fun to watch.

As far as the SEC tournament is concerned....laying an egg there is unfortunately a tradition as old as Tennessee basketball.

His teams were "unlikeable?" Any team with Ron Slay on it could not possibly called unlikeable....Tony Harris notwithstanding. That squad did have a high tatoo quotient for the times. Otherwise, averaging 85 points per game was a heckuva lot more entertaining than a typical 37-35 O'Neil mud-wrestle. Maybe it was just me..

And if one in-person SECT disappointment is all you had, then you have a lot of catching up to do.

All of this dirt-shoveling on Green would make sense if we were some kind of basketball powerhouse. One could see Duke, UNC, or UL grousing about the kind of four year run he had.

To each his own, I guess. Yes, even with Ron Slay his teams were "unlikeable", as was he. That SC game in the SECT was particularly bad, due that team being ranked in the top 5 at one point that season. They were more concerned about how they looked than how they played. They scored a lot, but played no D and got out-hustled regularly. Need I mention SW MO St.?
O'neil's teams were painful to watch, but his recruiting laid the foundation for what JG did.

He had limited personality, no chin, and gumby armed in disgust at the refs often. I think all that turned people off. Akin to having Weis or somebody on the sideline whose appearance or demeanor irritates.
Just being brutally honest.

Yeah, SW MO St. was bad.

Beating KY 3 out of 4 in the 09 and 00 seasons was pretty sweet, especially the game at Rupp.

Hey, I'm not claiming JG was more than a mediocre coach and in the end it made sense that both parties parted ways. But all of this horrible-terrible-unlikeable stuff is mostly undeserved. Imo.

Sure. Turkeyneck Green, ball-sack Green...arms folded...ugly sweaters.

I mostly watched the games though.

I hear ya, always fun to beat the Cats. Deserved or not, he was despised by (most of) the fans by the time he left.

People worried about ethics and squeeky clean players need to move on from JG quickly.
Before cameraphones I believe. Fortunately for them. Hell, for me too.

I've heard all kinds of crap. I used to hang out with one of the ex-players from Green's tenure at UT. His opinion differed from that of other guys on the team at that time.

I've never seen it discussed on here that I remember and was curious to hear opinions, facts, rumors, all the good stuff....

He was an alcoholic. He was on Cherokee golf course during practices. He sexually harassed every girl in the AD. He never visited a single recruit. He called players by their # because he didn't know their name. Because he called Dickey a "horse's ass." Because he had already bought a "retirement" boat. Because he sucked.
