Why was Bill Battle fired?

I remember well. The program was deteriorating rapidly. Alabama was getting everyone they wanted and more. UT was struggling to get mid-major players. We had talent deficits to Miss St, Ole Miss even Vandy. We had guys that didn't weigh 200 lbs plugged into DT. (What was that guy's name? HE was a warrior but just way undersized) I want to say Jenkins.

Lost to Kentucky in his last season. I think it was the last time we lost to them

I remember when a moving van was sent to his house. He resigned after we lost to Kentucky in 1976. His last game was against Vandy, which he won. He wasn't a popular choice to begin with, being an Alabama alumnus.

PURE AND SIMPLE.

Everybody lost to Bama then (Georgia didn't fire Dooley) but losses to Vandy in 75 and Kentucky in 76, did him in. Plus dumb coaching decisions, such as going for a first down against Georgia on fourth and two, from our own 30 yard line, while in the lead, late in the fourth quarter (and it was homecoming) was the coup de gras(?sp).

Yeah getting fired from UT and starting his own business was probably the best thing that ever happened to him. He's loaded now.

I'd say that is an understatement. He just sold out to IMG for what has to be an ungodly amount of money. It blew my mind to read that his company was responsible for licensing the merchandise of about 75% of the NCAA including the Heisman Trophy and the BCS.

We had one of those in 2006. He wasn't undersized, just under-talented.

Yep I remember you couldn't look at a player and tell if he was a lineman or a back.

Maybe you should ask Ray Trail that question if you truly want the answer. In case you don't know anything about Ray, he was Coach Battle's Offensive Line coach and recruiting coorinator; he was considered the top offensive line coach in the SEC while he was at Tennessee. Ray probably still has some bitter feelings toward some supposedly UT boosters/fans from West Tennessee because it is commonly known that a large number of these people destroyed Tennessee's recruiting in the Memphis and surrounding areas in West Tennessee. This was done by their constant yapping about Coach Battle and got to where they not only weren't contributing to the University but were actually telling recruits not to go there. Coach Battle turned out to be the real winner in all that mess because he has become mega rich from his business interests and that's something he couldn't have done at Tennessee. BTW, despite all the crap Bill received from the supposedly UT fans, I've never heard of him bad mouthing UT over what happened; he is a real class act.

Wow, I think some of these fans are on this board now?
